Defining the Toplineand Bottomline • What is the faculty bottomline? • Any of the top 10 univs advance promotions based on only published peer reviewed papers? • Is this the way we want to go? • What is the faculty topline? • Dictated by the sponsor and/or geared towards society • Improving standard of life, operations • Can we have work only to improve the topline? • Can we have work only to improve the bottomline? • Mapping the bottomline to topline • Whose job is this? • Is there a way to monitor this? • Is there a way to incentivize this?

  4. Positions of Vision • Empowering Dean R&D to drive research direction • Empowering Dean R&D to drive topline in conjunction with the sponsor • Definition of thrust areas • Carrots for successful research • Re-hauling the promotions system

Example of 3-way interactive model for successful topline and bottomline STEP1: Agency needs to find problems of importance to PSUs OR PSUs and Faculty need to together understand issues to be resolved. STEP2: Agency funds the project PSU appoints an implementation team. Faculty dedicates time and other resources. STEP3: Agency monitors the implementation of the project. STEP4: delivering the project Key: implementation agency/PSU needs to be accountable Funding Agency Implementation agency Faculty Examples: RUTAG, Karjat Water issues, MTNL, Nanotech, etc.

  6. Incubation • Can we create the next Google, Microsoft, Cisco… are university incubated startups? • Do we have the necessary infrastructure to support these endeavors? • Do faculty/students get the adequate support/opportunity? • Is the ecosystem in place? • What can we do to drive the ecosystem? • Perseverance …. At all levels..

  7. Manpower.. • How can we motivate BTECHs to a Ph.D ? • How can we motivate our Ph.Dsto excel in research? • How can we get a continuous supply of Ph.Ds that are truly quality? • What additional incentives would drive manpower? • Does the project staff get its due? Is there a way to recognize their achievements? Can we grow their career paths? • Making our Ph.D programs more inclusive to industry candidates • Interdisciplinary options for courses, students • Support staff woes

  8. Support infrastructure for research • Service centers in the institute • Service centers in the city/state/country • Interface to the outside world • Pure research staff hiring • Automating institute processes • Adopting efficient management norms for mundane processes
