  1. Bellringer: How Healthy Are You? Personal Inventory Write yes or no for each statement on a separate sheet of paper. Physical health: I eat a well-balanced diet. I snack on healthful foods I sleep eight or nine hours a night. I exercise regularly. I do not use tobacco, alcohol or drugs. I am within 5 pounds of my ideal weight. I am usually energetic and feel good.

I like to be alone sometimes. I can name several things I do well. I can tell others what I’m feeling. I ask for help when I need it. I take responsibility for my actions.

When I have a problem with someone, I try to work it out. I work well in a group. I can say no to my friends. I do not talk behind people’s backs. I get along with several different people.

  4. Score your inventory. Give yourself 1 point for each yes. In each area: 6-7 = very good 0-2= you need work in this area

  7. Being Healthy Health is a combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being. You can think of your health as a triangle with three equal sides.

  8. Physical Health Your physical health involves the condition of your body. To keep your body strong and healthy: • Eat a well-balanced diet. • Participate in regular physical activity. • Get at least nine hours of sleep every night. • Have regular health screenings. • Avoid tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs. • Understand and follow school rules related to health. • Avoid unnecessary risks.

  9. Mental/Emotional Health Your mental/emotional health relates to your thoughts and feelings. To keep yourself mentally and emotionally healthy: • Face difficult situations with a positive and realistic outlook. • Identify, express, and manage your feelings appropriately. • Set priorities so that you can handle all your responsibilities. • Use your talents effectively to achieve your goals. • Be patient with yourself as you learn a new skill. If you make mistakes, think about how you can do better the next time. • Accept responsibility for your actions.

  10. Social Health Social health involves the ways in which you relate to other people. To form strong social connections: • Support and value family members. • Have a friendly, open attitude towards people. • Pay attention to what you say and how you say it. • Be a loyal, truthful, and dependable friend. • Learn to disagree without arguing. • Respect others, do not insult them or put them down.

  11. Measuring Your Health To get a complete view of how healthy you are, you need to perform an honest self-assessment of your behavior patterns. It can help you judge your current health status and may reveal areas you can work to improve.

  12. What Is Wellness? Keeping the three parts of the health triangle in balance is the best way to achieve wellness. To achieve and maintain a high level of wellness throughout your life: • Make wise decisions. • Practice healthful behaviors each day. Your health and wellness are related. Your level of wellness depends on how the three aspects of health interact over time.

  13. Vocabulary Review Health is a combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being.

  14. Vocabulary Review Self-assessment is a careful examination and judgment of your own patterns of behavior.

  15. Vocabulary Review Wellness is a state of well-being, or balanced health.

  16. Line up one of the short edges of a sheet of paper with one of the long edges. Cut off the leftover rectangle. Repeat Step 1 with the second sheet. You will now have two squares.

  17. Stack the two squares and staple along the fold. Title your journal “Three Parts of Health.” Label the inside page spreads Physical, Mental/Emotional, and Social.

  18. Take notes on what you learn about each of the three aspects of health, and give examples from your own life.

  19. Find out if you know what it takes to be healthy. Take the Health Inventory for Chapter 1 at http://www.glencoe.com/qe/qe65.php?qi=1685

  20. Measuring Your Health To determine the status of your own health triangle, perform this activity. On the sheet of paper provided to you, write “Yes” or “No,” depending on whether each of the statements describes you.

  21. Measuring Your Health (cont’d.) Use graph paper to make a model of your results. • For each area of health, cut a strip of graph paper. Include one square for each “yes” answer. • Label one of the strips “Physical,” one “Mental/Emotional,” and one “Social.” • Compare the lengths of the strips. Make a triangle with the three strips.

  22. Measuring Your Health (cont’d.) Take a look at the triangle. • Does the triangle have equal sides, or is it lopsided? • Is there one area that you are strong in? Is there an area you need to work on? What can you do to improve your health and balance your triangle?
