  1. Life on the Slave Plantations project This will help you gain your Access 3 Social Subjects certificate along with your work in Geography & Modern Studies

  2. Instructions • You are going to carry out some independent research to discover more about life on the slave plantations. • You will then decide how similar or different the life of a slave and the life of a plantation owner were.

  3. 4 key ideas 1st – Choose and copy down 4 of the key ideas & questions from the list which you are most interested in. • Cause – why were plantations set up? • Conflict – did the slaves resist or protest? • Location – where were plantations set up? • Participation – who were involved in the plantations? • Equality – was everyone on the plantation equal? • Power – did the overseers have the same power as the plantation owners ? • Culture – was the slaves’ culture different from the plantation owners’ culture? • Difference – were the slaves’ clothes, houses and food different from the plantation owners?

  4. Top tip! • Take a double page for each of your four key ideas: • Key idea 1 • Key idea 2 • Key idea 3 • Key idea 4 Anytime you find out a fact about your key idea then write it in those pages and it will make organising your notes and writing your report. Remember to write down any books or websites where you found useful information !

  5. Research time • 2nd – Now use this research time to find out the answers to the questions. Make sure you write down where you found your information (title of book, website etc) Remember you need to use 4 different sources of information. You can start your research now by watching a clip from ‘Roots’ about plantation life. Make notes in your jotter for each of your 4 key ideas.

You will need 4 sources of information • There is a lot of information available on the life on the plantations: • You will have access to different books and film clips in your classroom • You could read first hand accounts from slaves and from plantation owners • There are lots of websites on life on the plantations.

Now to complete yourAccess 3 work • Your teacher will give you a special sheet to fill in. • You need to write down your 4 key ideas and the main things you learned about each one. • You need to write down the 4 sources of information you used in your research. • You need to compare the life of a slave with the life of a plantation owner and find 2 things which were different.
