John 15:22-25 • 22 "If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no cloak for their sin. • 23 "He who hates Me hates My Father also. • 24 "If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have seen and also hated both Me and My Father. • 25 "But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, 'They hated Me without a cause.

  3. Introduction • Πορφασις: Literally means a cloak.. Figuratively refers to making excuses for our actions…At times is translated, “pretence,” which is a false claim • Jesus came teaching and performing miracles-Jn 3:1-3; Luk 7:22 • Thus, we have no excuses for our sins-Jn 15:22-24; Jn 9:41 • Many think they will escape God’s judgment by hiding behind a cloak to cover their sins, but they are mistaken

  4. The Cloak of Ignorance • Ignorance is not a cloak for sin-Ro 1:20-21; Acts 17:30-31 • Ignorance will not absolve man of his sin-2Ti 2:14; 2Cor 11:3 • Ignorance brings destruction-Hos 4:6; 2Th 1:6-9 • Knowledge brings salvation-Matt 11:28-30

The Cloak of Immaturity • Immaturity is not a cloak we hide behind-Heb 5:12 • Babes in Christ drink milk in order to grow-1Pt 2:2 • Babes in Christ should press on to perfection-Heb 6:1-2 • The Christian should mature in knowledge and understanding while remaining as a babe regarding malice-1Cor 14:20

  6. The Cloak of Religion • We cannot hide behind the cloak of Religious Relativism • One church is not as good as another, there are not different ways to heaven, but there is absolute truth • Jesus Christ is the way-Jn 14:6; Matt 7:13-14; Eph 4:4 • Jesus Christ is the truth-Jn 14:6; Jn 8:31-23; Eph 4:4 • Jesus Christ is the life-Jn 14:6; Acts 4:12; Eph 4:4

  7. Conclusion • We have no cloak to hide behind; we have no excuse • Remove the cloak of ignorance by learning • Remove the cloak of immaturity by growing • Remove the cloak of religious relativism by standing up for the way, truth, and life found in Jesus Christ
