  2. IRONY: Defined • There is no better way to define IRONY than from this example quote courtesy of the movie, “CON-AIR.” • Garland Greene: “Define irony: a bunch of idiots dancing around on a plane to a song made famous by a band that died in a plane crash.”

  3. IRONY: Dictionary Definition • 1. The use of words to express something different from and often opposite to their literal meaning. • 2. Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs • Explanation: sarcasm

  4. How Shakespeare Used IRONY • Perhaps the simplest form of irony is rhetorical irony, when, for effect, a speaker says the direct opposite of what he means. • Thus, in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, when Mark Antony refers in his funeral oration to Brutus and his fellow assassins as “honorable men” he is really saying that they are totally dishonorable and not to be trusted.

  5. IRONY at it’s best! • A man drives to McDonald’s, parks as close to the door as he can, walks slowly inside, finds the shortest possible line, stands at the counter, asks about the new Asian salad, but instead decides to purchase 4 Big Macs, 3 large fries, 2 chocolate milkshakes, and…and…and a DIET COKE! Go Figure… • Now that’s Irony!!!
