  4. Things Fall Apart: Part Two • In the first part of this unit, you have been reading the novel Things Fall Apart and analyzing how a writer develops a story and its characters. In this last half of the unit, you will continue reading the novel and will also read informational texts to help you set the context for the novel and learn more about its author in preparation for writing a literary analysis essay.

  5. Embedded Assignment 2: Writing a Literary Analysis of a Novel • Read and annotate pg. 221 • *Advice: Start gathering ideas as we continue reading the rest of the novel.

  6. Essay Ideas • Write an analytical essay about Things Fall Apart in which you examine a character’s response to the cultural collision caused by the introduction of Western ideas into Ibo culture. • Who comes to mind already after reading chapter 14-15?

  7. Group Work: Chapters 14-15 1. Pg. 201: Complete the chart with text evidence on what it means to be a man or woman in Ibo culture. In the second column, respond with comments. • 2. Pg. 201 Answer in “my notes”: What connection can you make between Okonkwo’s fears and his downfall? • 3. Pg. 202: Add text evidence that presents a different view of gender now that Okonkwo has been exiled. Add comments in chart. • 4. Pg. 202: How are ideas of gender expressed in the novel similar to and different from your own culture? • 5. Pg. 203: question 1 and the chart • 6. Discuss: Is Okonkwo a tragic hero? Why or why not?
