What is GEO? • The Global Environment Outlook (GEO) -series of reports on the state of the global environment, and associated products • The GEO Process: a consultative, participatory, capacity building process initiated by UNEP for global environmental assessment and reporting in response to the requirement of Agenda 21 and UNEP GC (18th Session) decision of May 1995

Key Questions that GEO addresses… • What are the major regional & global environmental problems, both current and emerging ? • What are the major demographic, social, & economic driving forces behind the observed problems & trend? • Where are we heading if we do business as usual? • Where do we want to be heading ? • What is being done to address environmental concerns and what can be done in future to move forward on the path of sustainable development ?(i.e. what are alternative policy packages and the implication if implemented?)

Annual GEO Statement Mandate UNEP Governing Council Decision 22/1/IB (2003) calls for: “annual global environment outlook statements on the environment, inter alia, highlighting significant environmental events and achievements during the year and raising awareness of emerging issues from scientific research and other sources”

SIDS Environment Outlook Mandate UNEP Governing Council Decision 22/13 (2003): strengthen the institutional capacity of SIDS to effectively achieve the sustainable development goals ... through the provision of dedicated technical and financial support  increased funding for activities, particularly in connection with preparing for and implementation of the outcomes of the 2004 Mauritius international meeting

Section III: Option for Consideration (15 pages) • Identification and discussion concerning policy options and other types of potential interventions for the future which might be national, regional and global in nature and include suggested practices and innovative possibilities(e.g. systems that take into consideration land-use patterns, soil erosion, watershed management and waste disposal, etc).

Timeline 2003 June : Inception Meeting July –August : Development of Outline and Research Sept –Oct : Development of a draft booklet Oct-Nov : Technical review of first draft booklet Nov – Dec: Preparation of Second Draft and review 2004 January : Distribution of Second Draft at Inter-regional Preparatory Meeting of the International Meeting of the SIDS (Barbados +10) in Nassau, Bahamas February : Incorporation of Feedback from countries into second draft booklet to produce final booklet March – July : Translating, editing, designing and Printing of the booklet August :Launch and distribution of the booklet at the International Meeting of the SIDS (Barbados +10) in Mauritius.
