  2. Intro • Over millions of people are harmed day to day by violent acts. • How can this problem be solved? • What should happen to the offender? • How will victims receive justice?

What is Restorative Justice? • Defined by Kimmet Edgar and Tim Newall, restorative justice is: • A distinctive philosophy of justice, with a focus on making amends for the harm done. • A collection of diverse practices that goes beyond the typical prison system rituals of resolving conflicts Edgar and Newll. Restorative Justice in Prisons.

  4. Foundations for Restorative Justice • Work to restore harm to those who have been affected by the crime. • Those who were harmed and affected by the crime has the opportunity to participate if they wish. • The government’s role is to preserve a just public order, and the community’s is to create and maintain a just peace.

  5. Core Values of Restorative Justice • Healing • Voluntary participation • Respect • Empowerment • Inclusiveness • Equal status • Personal accountability • Problem-solving

  6. Restorative Justice IS: Restorative Justice IS NOT: About forgiveness or mediation An alternative to punishment A specific program • Giving the offender a chance to acknowledge his/her actions • Giving the victim answers to the crime that was done • Taking steps to repair the problem
