  4. Changing of Skills Categories Revision of skills categories in keeping with: • Economic development • Technological innovation • Changing of the labor market needs

  5. Traditional Categories in 1970s • Welding • Wood painting • Radio and TV repair • Watch repair • Typesetting • Telephone switchboard operation for persons with visual disabilities

  6. Recent Trend -1- Computer-related skill categories have been increased since 1990s, including: • Data Processing • CAD-Architecture, CAD-Machinery • Word Processing • Computer Programming • Creating Web Pages • Desktop Publishing

  7. Recent Trend-2- “Basic Categories” in the following categories have been introduced so that persons with intellectual and mental disabilities can challenge. • Dress Making • Furniture Making • Data Processing • Coffee Shop Service

  8. Successful Role of Abilympics Case 1 Ms. Yayoi Mizohata, who has intellectual disabilities • Silver Medallist in the “Coffee Shop Service” Category in Japan’s National Abilympics in 2006 • Got employed by the Starbucks Coffee, Japan in 2007

  9. Yayoi got the opportunity to serve the coffee to the Crown Prince of Japan in the demonstration “Coffee Shop Service” in the 7th IA in Shizuoka.

  10. Case 2 Mr. Tetsuji Eriguchi, who has hearing disabilities • Gold Medallist in the Lathe Turning Category in the Japan’s National Abilympics in 2002 • Having gained trust by his superiors, he is now responsible for training younger skilled professionals in Toyota Automobile Company

  11. Tetsuji says: By doing your best in the Abilympics, you will: • Become mentally tough and confident, • Learn the importance of challenging something and continuing it, and • Gain trust among your colleagues.
