Directions • Take out a sheet of paper, separate from where you will be taking your general notes. • Put your Name, Date & Period at the top. • As we go through the notes, you will be asked to respond to a series of discussion questions. • This is your exit slip to leave class today. You will turn this in for a grade.

  5. Mass Mass ≠ Weight • MASS is a measure of the amount of matter in an object • Mass will not change as you move from place to place • Mass is the measure of the inertia of an object • The more mass an object has, the harder it is to move it (or stop it)

  6. Response 1 • In your own words, write a one sentence summary that explains mass.

Weight WEIGHT is a measure of the gravitational force exerted on an object (the force with which Earth’s gravity pulls on a quantity of matter) • Weight changes due to gravity • The force varies from place to place • Ex: Weight of an object will be different on Earth than on the moon • You can be weight-less in space...but you’re not mass-less!

  9. Types and Units • Mass is a PROPERTY • Measured in kilograms (kg) • Weight is a FORCE • Measured in newtons (N) A force, in simple terms, is either a push or a pull
