  1. Politics By Courtney Smith & Grace Parsons

  2. What’s What? • Capitalism: is a political and economic system in which private owners control a country's trade and industry in order to make a profit. • Socialism: is an economic term for a political system in which the government regulates the economy. The way in which goods and services are produced and distributed is owned collectively or controlled by a centralized government that has control over the economy.

  3. What political movements were occurring at the time? • Women’s Suffrage Movement (1832-early 1900s): women became more politically active as the Liberal Government supported this cause. As the Liberal Party was in power throughout the early years of the 20th century, the women’s Suffrage Movement gained a lot of support and eventually the Representation of the People Act was passed in 1918, allowing eligible women to vote. • Second Industrial Revolution (1875-1905): Chemical & Electricity 1836: Samuel F. B. Morse invents the telegraph. 1866: Cyrus Field lays the first successful transatlantic cable. 1876: Alexander Graham Bell invents the telephone. 1879: Thomas Edison invents the indandescent light bulb. 1892: Rudolf Diesel patents the diesel engine. 1899: Guglielmo Marconi invents the wireless. 1903: The Wright Brothers make the first successful airplane flight

  4. Liberal Welfare Reforms (1906-1914): Herbert Henry Asquith was leader of the Liberal Party and Prime Minister at the time. He imposed the Peoples Budget which raised taxes on the rich (generally land owners) in order to support the welfare programmes and fund for new battle ships needed in preparation for imminent war. • The First World War (1914-1918): The assassination of Franz Ferdinand on the 28th June 1914 prompted the Kaiser (Adolf Hitler) to offer Emperor Franz Joseph full support for his plans to invade the Kingdom of Serbia which he blamed for the assassination.

  5. Who was in power? • The Monarchy: King Edward: reigned from 22 January 1901 – 6 May 1910 (his death) King George: took over from Edward and reigned from 6 May 1910 – 20 January 1936 • Political parties in power: King Edward VI appointed: Arthur Balfour (1902-05), Conservative Party Sir Henry Campbell- Bannerman (1905-08),Liberal Party Herbert Henry Asquith (1908-16), Liberal Party

  6. King George V appointed: David Lloyd George (1916-22), Liberal Party

  7. What caused the decline of the Liberal Party? • Until the Independent Labour Party was formed the Liberal Party was the party that best represented the interests of the working man. • The formation of the Independent Labour Party caused a decrease in the number of the Liberal party's voters as the number of working class men with the vote increased and they voted for the government party which best supported them.

  8. Along with that, leading a nation into war is no easy thing; especially due to the fact that the Liberal Party is traditionally an 'anti-war party'. • Asquith led the nation into the First World War despite his party's peace orientated ways and to his own demise. He remained prime minister until around 1916 when he was 'sidelined'. After a series of political and military blunders (Shell Scandal and failed offensive at the 1915 Battle of Gallipoli) David Lloyd George took over as head of the coalition. • There were several factors that contributed to the downfall of the Liberal Party. The disagreements between George and Asquith created a split and much support was lost to the new Labour Party.
