To interact with UPLift! view as a Slide Show Using Library resources effectively Advanced Skills This section of UPLift! is aimed at students who want to further develop their information literacy skills. It focuses on using resources in the university library and beyond. For example, it will help you to locate resources which are useful for postgraduate research, such as collections in museums and galleries. Perhaps you know how to do some of these things already? Take the short quiz to find out. Perhaps you need to develop a particular skill? Take the link to find out more. If you would like some more help click on the Help! button, otherwise move to the next page using the arrow icon. Q&A

  2. First of all, select Slide Show, then From the Beginning. Click on Q&A to link to a short quiz to see if you can do the basics of this skill. Tick the box when you have completed the quiz. Click on the ? icon to find links to information, guides, video clips etc. to help you develop this skill. Move between slides by following the navigation buttons at the bottom of the screen.

Q&A Using Library resources effectively Advanced Skills Suggest when you may need to access archival materials My supervisor has told me to find some primary source material from the local archives, what does she mean? Click on the camera to reveal what might be contained in an archive... Material in archives can sometimes be unique, specialised or rare. It might include, manuscripts, letters, diaries, photographs, artefacts, moving image and sound collections. So these can give an interesting perspective to your research.

Items may be published or unpublished and in a variety of media formats. Did you know that the University of Portsmouth has an archive which is housed in the University Library? Visit the website for information about the collection and how to access it. There are a range of local archive collections too. Visit Portsmouth Museums and Records website for further details.

When your search results are returned, look to the left of the page, you will see a heading, Collections. One of the options listed below this heading is Rare Books Collection. Click on it. 1. How many items do you find? 2. What is the oldest book we have about Portsmouth in the Rare Books Collection? Need a hint? click the picture(right).

When you are searching the Discovery Service or the Library catalogue you may come across items with RARE BOOKS COLL preceding the shelf mark. You will need to ask at an information desk to consult items in this collection. They are all reference only. Parade includes everything ever published by University staff and researchers True False Wrong, it’s false! Well done! That’s correct. Staff and researchers are strongly encouraged to deposit their research papers in the Institutional Repository. Most of the research is from 2008 – present.

However, the resources recommended below are useful to a wide range of subjects: Culture Grid - provides access to UK arts, culture and heritage collections. You can also access European collections through Europeana. Results draw on image, audio and video artefacts. Archives Hub – the archive resources of over 220 UK institutions are searchable via this website. Cornucopia – a database containing information about more than 6,000 collections in UK museums, archives, libraries and galleries.

Using Library resources effectively Advanced Skills Suggest where to find out which libraries hold particular journals Once you are certain that University of Portsmouth library doesn’t have the journal you require in its printed or electronic collections, you could begin your search with Suncat. Suncat includes the serials collections of over 100 research libraries in the UK. Remember that if you are looking for a specific journal article which is not available in the University library, you can request the article via the inter-library loans service.

What is the difference between these 2 options? Click here for the answer You will have to follow the link to find out. Using Library resources effectively Advanced Skills Describe how to search and access UK PhD theses You can search for PhDs, produced by members of the University of Portsmouthby visiting the Theses section of the library website. You can search for printed and electronic theses. However, if you want to find out what has been published in the UK and Northern Ireland you should visit the British Library’s Ethos service. If the thesis is available online it provides a link to access or to download the item. If it is not yet available, if may be possible to request a digital copy. You should speak to your Faculty Librarian.
