  2. Trying to maintain neutrality after World War I, rejecting: • Versailles Treaty • Covenant of the League of Nations • Japanese aggression: • seizing Manchuria in 1931 • war on China in 1937

  3. US response to Japanese aggresion: • Roosevelt shuts off American trade • Embargo on exporting aircraft to Japan • Freezing all Japanese assets in the United States • US fleet at Pearl Harbor remained the only serious threat to Japan’s navy(blocking oil tankers). Japan reacted.

  4. Attack on Pearl Harbor: • 2400 Americans dead • Pacific fleet crippled • US fully involved in the World War II • Hitler declares war on US and Great Britain • (result of US aid to Allies) • US supplied Allies with war material worth more than $50 billion during the next four years

  5. Chief battlegrounds: • Europe • Asia • North Africa • Atlantic & Pacific Oceans

  11. In June 6, 1944, the American and British forces led by General Dwight Eisenhower landed on the beaches of Normandy, in history’s greatest naval invasion.

  12. In 1945, after the invasion of Berlin, Japan was issued an unconditional surrender by the United States, Great Britain and Soviet Union. After ignoring the ultimatum, United States dropped atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and August 9, 1945, killing more than 130, 000 civilians. Japan surrendered instantly, ending the Second World war
