Why is currency important? • Competent staff • Learning more relevant to workplace • Employees more productive and engaged • Improved confidence – trainers, students, employer • Improved quality teaching and assessment practices • Employer engagement through industry consultation • Improved reputation of the Institute • Continuous compliance improvement

  4. TAFE Teachers must have • Vocational qualification • Industry experience • Trainer and assessor qualification • Currency

  5. Vocational competency • Vocational competency is defined as broad industry knowledge and experience, usually combined with a relevant industry qualification. • Vocational competency must be considered on an industry-by-industry basis and with reference to the guidance provided in the Assessment Guidelines of the relevant Training Package. • Vocational currency, industry currency, trainer and assessor currency are an integral component of vocational competency.

  6. Vocational currency • teachers should hold an up to date, relevant AQF level qualification and or have the relevant vocational competencies at least to the level being delivered or assessed • be familiar with the content of their vocational area and know their subject • have relevant current experience and an understanding of industry related skills and work practices • have the pedagogical skills required to teach their students

  7. Industry currency • keeping up to date with industry specific skills relevant to today’s workplaces or a discipline area • effective industry consultation • improving professional knowledge, capabilities and practice • current relevant industry qualification

  8. Trainer and assessor currency • the necessary training and assessment competencies (TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment as from 1 July 2013) • VET professional knowledge and skills • VET operating environment • Training and assessment policies and practices
