  5. Waste Audit Observations: Disposable products – 35% Paper waste – 30%, 20% are recycled Bathroom paper towels – 25% Food waste – 10%

Goals (1-3years) • Waste reduction: • Eliminate disposable products • No pop cans • Reduce/eliminate food packaging waste • Install hand blower in rest rooms • Install dual flush Water Closet • Set double sided b/w print as default • Reuse paper for fax confirmation • Recycling: Provide recycle bins to all staff and volunteers • Join Zero Waste network

Implementation Strategy and Measure • Refrain from purchasing disposable products • Refrain from printing unless absolutely essential • Employees to have their own green kit • Perform waste audit once a year to determine the percentage variation and alter practices accordingly Long Term Goal • Be the first CDC to accomplish Zero Waste Goal • Goal to be Accomplished by 2020

Energy Analysis Observations: Based on the energy use from 2009 and 2010 • Cost per sq. ft electricity $0.71 > than previous year • Average cost per unit (kwh) $0.14 • Cost Per sq.ft Natural gas $0.66 < than previous year • Average cost per unit (mcf) $11.87 • Leading us to spend a total of approximately $ 10,000 in energy use

Goals (1-3years) Implementation Strategy and Measure • Reduce 10% of the cost of energy in the first year. • Reduce 25% of the cost of energy in three years. • Perform an energy audit, implement recommendations and perform energy analysis again • Turn off Office, kitchen and conference room lights when not in use • Shutdown computers when not in use • Set the computers to hibernate after 15 minutes of staying idle

  10. Long Term Goal • Be self-sufficient by generating power through renewable energy sources, either solar PV, solar thermal, geothermal or a combination of different technologies.

  11. Procurement • Observation: • Currently no green office supplies, kitchen supplies or cleaning products are purchased Goals • Modify the current procurement practices to incorporate purchasing sustainable products

Implementation Strategies • Office Supplies: • Purchase reusable pens, recycled papers, green inks for printers and green marketing materials • Minimize mailings and flyers when possible • Kitchen and Cleaning Supplies: • Purchase sustainable paper/plate products until phased out • Purchase green cleaning products Long Term Goals Create a procurement policy document for the agency

Organizational Culture Observations: Pros • No resistance from majority of staff to embrace sustainable practices • Willingness to learn and implement Observations: Cons • Not all staff are on board yet • How far can we go to implement sustainable practices still is dependent on the bottom line- funding

Goals (1-3years) • Incrementally increase employee interest and participation • Institutionalize sustainability within the organization • Create a Sustainability Director position, if funding permits • Yearly calendar with monthly green tips for staff • Two staff to secure LEED AP ND Implementation Strategies • Seminars or brown bag lunch series every quarter – Rose B • BADC video sessions on past bioneers topics, monthly - Deepa V • Field trips to recycling facility or local farms, green businesses, green buildings and so on – Deepa Vedavyas • Include sustainability on the agenda for staff meetings – Rose B • Attend E4S events or similar events at CSU once every quarter with entire staff – Deepa V and Rose B

Projects and Programs Energy: Goals Implementation Currently a recipient of state grant for energy audits for 15 merchants, expand that to all merchants Implement storm water management plan in all streetscape improvements Currently performing 5 residential energy audits Look in to installing solar collector or similar large scale energy generation technique in LEED ND area • Create Green Retail District along Buckeye Road • Implement a sustainable streetscape plan with storm water management techniques • Energy retrofits to all residents in the model block area • Install renewable energy techniques in new construction within LEED ND area

Land and Food Goals Implementation Work with the city of Cleveland to help residents acquire vacant land to reutilize Bring in speakers from local food Cleveland and universities Sponsor block club leaders to get trained in OSU extension Partner with botanical garden to train residents in urban farming • Transform 50% of vacant land within SII area to productive spaces such as urban farms, vineyard, community gathering spaces or community garden • Expand existing urban farm to 2.5 acres • Educate and inspire youths on techniques on farming and facilitate communication with local food group • Three fresh food stops available increase frequency to 5 days/wk

  18. Water Goal • Distribute 50 additional rain barrels in the next 1-3years • Build your own barrel workshop • Residents capture 50% of water and qualify for storm water credits • 2-3 rain gardens in the next three years • Build only permeable pavements and sidewalks within the neighborhood

Built Environment Goals Implementation Encourage builders to build LEED Gold or Higher Install solar collector at the LEED ND, parabolic trough Write a NOACA grant to secure funding for implementing plans related to TOD Work with DOE to secure funding for renewable energy techniques in the theatre • Build only energy efficient homes LEED Gold or higher homes • Be a prototype neighborhood for smart homes • Saint Luke’s LEED ND, a prototype for sustainable neighborhood development • Set an example statewide for an artistic and sustainable Transit Oriented Development (TOD) • Restore Moreland Theatre to a LEED Platinum historic cultural center

  21. Community Engagement • Partner with local schools and churches to educate, create learning gardens • Engage the youths • Partner with OSU and BW College to explore inner city farming opportunities as part of their course work in urban agriculture at lower buckeye • Educate merchants on sustainable business practices Set up recycling for the Buckeye commercial district • Identify local entrepreneurs and engage them in outreach

Community Engagement • Connect buckeye to the bike trail in Shaker Heights • Create a Sustainability Initiative section in website • Include articles in newsletter • Publish brochure and booklet on various initiatives • Educate community on storm water management • Engage the entire neighborhood in healthy living/healthy eating • Present opportunities to attend Sustainable Summit and other workshops related to sustainability

Green events • Create two annual green events such as • check your vehicle air pressure day- to create awareness on fuel efficiency • Electronics recycling day – create awareness of the health hazards • Light bulb recycling day – create awareness on mercury and fluorescent lighting • Create a demo project such as mobile solar electric generator or rain barrel or so on at the Buckeye Festival

  24. Celebrate Success • Conduct NEO Chapter USGBC tour • Upon completion of each goal we will have an in house Green Party
