  1. Unit 5 – Mining Nevada Issues 465Mr. Bencivenga

  2. Unit 4 Research Assignment is past due after today • Course Project Topic still needs to be selected by several students. See instructor during break. • Unit 5 Research Assignment due by next Saturday • Today’s Objectives • Summarize the history of mining in Virginia City • Comstock Lode • Explain the role of immigrants and women in Nevada’s mining boom • Provide time for students to research course project and do unit 5 research assignment Past due and what’s up NEXT

  3. There are 3 levels of government • Federal – State - Local • The State of Nevada’s government is patterned after the Federal Government • Executive – Legislative – Judicial branches • Nevada has a biennial legislature • What is the meaning of “biennial”? • The legislature is composed of two governing houses: • The Senate and the Assembly • Both have defined districts of representation Review from Unit 4

  4. There are six (maybe 8?)local governments in the Las Vegas Valley – they organize their governments similarly but with mild differences • Clark County • City of Las Vegas • City of Henderson • City of North Las Vegas • Boulder City • Native American Reservations Review from Unit 4

  5. The Federal Government is the largest employer in Nevada • Nellis Air Base as well as numerous other military and government installations • Ever hear of area 51? • The services they provide and also require have huge impact on Nevada • The majority of land in Nevada (about 86%) is owned by the Federal Government Review from Unit 4

  6. The gold rush created by the Sutter’s Mill find in California changed Nevada forever • 1859 – while searching for gold in the area of Virginia City, that “damned blue stuff” is discovered • The Comstock Lode – The Big Bonanza • That DAMNED BLUE STUFF • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggYFxNHUmn8 7 minutes Nevada’s mining boom

  7. The greatest era of prosperity was between 1864 and 1878 – but mining operations continued into 1940 The Lode influenced the political and social structure of the state – it still does The “gambling” of mining set the stage for other types of gambling – casinos Mining still is huge in Nevada http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cc4BIqQfooM 3 min. Nevada’s mining boom

  8. The discovery of gold and silver pushed the boundaries of Nevada east and south • The federal National Mining Law of 1866 gave validity to mining • Miners could now claim public lands for the purpose of extracting minerals • The system is still with us today • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuNHDsS56aI&feature=results_video&playnext=1&list=PLA11A56DB2F174D65 3.5 min Nevada’s mining boom

  9. As surface silver became played out, the miners had to go underground Very dangerous – poison gases, scalding hot water, and most dangerous, mine collapses The “SQUARE SET” saved the day http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VVrcA2yVMU 8 min Nevada’s Mining boom

  10. The riches in Virginia City made it one of the largest cities west of the Mississippi River • Gambling, prostitution, violence all marked the social live of the city • Julia Bulette – very sought after prostitute • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMnhVZHl3tM Nevada’s Mining boom

  11. Men vastly outnumbered women Since women could not own property, the few women who weren’t prostitutes that did live in the city (mine owners wives and daughters), established the schools, churches, and cultural events http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVVO4g-XR9Q&feature=related 4 min Nevada’s Mining boom

  12. William Sharon – the most hated man in Nevada • Agent of the Bank of California • Tried to gain a monopoly of mines, mills, and railroads • Controlled prices charged on the railroad and what news was printed in the newspaper • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_EGgHRjXko&feature=related 5.5 min Nevada’s Mining boom

  13. As miners had to go deeper and deeper, and as the problems like hot water and cave-ins became more problematic, a man named Adolf Sutro thought he had the answer. Build a rail tunnel that would not only connect all of the mine tunnels, but would also drain all of the water Unfortunately, the tunnel was not successful Before the tunnel was built, the mines went deeper than the tunnel and the silver was getting “played out” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qaJbR306e8&feature=related 6 min Nevada’s Mining boom

  14. By 1877 as the silver plays out, people leave Virginia City The legacy of Virginia City however, is the engineering of mining technology The new machines and methods developed in Virginia City, allowed mines all over the world to become safer and more productive http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hrdi7KVfALg&feature=related 4min Mining goes bust!

  15. In the early 1900’s new technologies allow for the discovery of gold and silver in other Nevada areas • Tonopah – still has working silver mine • Goldfield – still has working gold mine • Bullfrog • Ely • Beatty • Searchlight • Rhyolite - Ghost town Second mining boom
