  1. The Christ Centered Family Ephesians 5:18-6:4 Created by David Turner For Sunrise Baptist Church, El Paso, TX www.Biblestudies-online.com

  2. The Christ Centered Family is a Family Controlled by the Spirit

  3. All Believers have been: • Indwelt by the Spirit • Romans 8:9 You, however, are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God lives in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. • Baptized by the Spirit • 1 Corinthians 12:13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. • Sealed by the Spirit • Ephesians 1:13 In Him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation—in Him when you believed—were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.

  4. But are all believers Controlled by the Spirit?

  5. Ephesians 5:18–6:4 (HCSB) 18And don’t get drunk with wine, which ⌊leads to⌋ reckless actions, but be filled with the Spirit: 19 speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music to the Lord in your heart, 20 giving thanks always for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another in the fear of Christ

  6. Comparison of wine in Spirit A person drunk with wine is controlled by wine, which leads to reckless actions. A person filled with the Spirit is controlled by the Spirit, which leads to…

  7. Control by the Spirit leads to… Outward Expression of Praise -19 speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, Inner Attitude of Worship - singing and making music to the Lord in your heart, Thanksgiving - 20 giving thanks always for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, Submission -21 submitting to one another in the fear of Christ

  8. Where there are spirit controlled churches there are spirit controlled homes.

  9. Spirit Controlled wives submit to their husbands 22 Wives, submit to your own husbands as to the Lord, 23 for the husband is head of the wife as also Christ is head of the church. He is the Savior of the body. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so wives should ⌊submit⌋ to their husbands in everything. • There’s a spill over of submission of one another • Not, as unto a perfect husband, but as to the Lord. • Christ is head of the church. • The church submits to Christ. • The husband is head of the family and as such is a figure of Christ over the family. Thus, the wife should submit to her husband as to Christ.

  10. A Christ Centered Home has a husband that loves his wife 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as also Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26 to make her holy, cleansing her in the washing of water by the word. 27 He did this to present the church to Himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but holy and blameless. • Paul spend 8 ½ verses instructing husbands compared to just 3 ½ with wives. • Husband are told to love them, not lead them. • Consistent with Christ’s instructions to serve • Consistent with Christ’s example of sacrifice • You can’t lead her to purity, self-sacrifice purifies her.

  11. A Loving Husband cares for his wife 28 In the same way, husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hates his own flesh, but provides and cares for it, just as Christ does for the church, 30 since we are members of His body Philip. 2:4–8 4 Everyone should look out not ⌊only⌋ for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. 5 Make your own attitude that of Christ Jesus, 6 who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to be used for His own advantage. 7 Instead He emptied Himself by assuming the form of a slave, taking on the likeness of men. And when He had come as a man in His external form, 8 He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death—even to death on a cross.

  12. The Family is a model of Christ and the Church 31For this reason a man will leave his father and motherand be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.32 This mystery is profound, but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 To sum up, each one of you is to love his wife as himself, and the wife is to respect her husband. • When Paul speaks of the family, he speaks of the church. • Christ loved and sacrificed himself for the church. Husbands are to do the same for their wives. • Believers are to fear and submit to Christ. Wives should fear (respect) and submit to their husbands.

  13. Children obey parents in a Christ Centered home 1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, because this is right. 2Honor your father and mother—which is the first commandment with a promise— 3that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life in the land.4 And fathers, don’t stir up anger in your children, but bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. • Children, obey parents (not just Dad). Not because they are perfect, do it in the Lord. • Fathers, • Don’t provoke your children to anger. • Col. 3:21 Fathers, do not exasperate your children, so they won’t become discouraged. • Train your Children in the Lord.

  14. Characteristics of a Christ Centered/Spirit Controlled Home • Christ is praised and spoken highly of • Christ is worshiped • There is thanksgiving for everything • There is general submission to each other • Wives Submit to their husband • Husbands love their wife • Children obey their parents • Parents don’t provoke their children, but train and instruct them in the Lord
