Preliminaries • In your notebooks, respond to the following prompt: “When you fill a glass halfway with water, some people look at the glass and say it is half-empty, and some look at it and say it is half-full. Supposedly, whether you label the glass as half-empty or half-full gives insight into whether you are a pessimist or optimist. Perhaps the way a person looks at the glass reflects whether they view the world in terms of what they think they have versus what they think they lack. What are you grateful for in your life? What do you think is lacking?”

  3. Objective: • The students will be able to identify the themes of the Orpheus myth.

  4. Focus Lesson: Orpheus… • Background • In-class reading • Small groups: respond to the following: • When the ruler of Hades releases Eurydice, what request does he make of Orpheus? (“He names only one condition: Upon leaving the underworld, Orpheus must not look back upon his love as she follows him, until they reach the upper world.”) • What is the nature of this test? (It is a test of faith to see if Orpheus can trust that Eurydice is behind him. It is also a test of temptation. • Is Orpheus able to wait until they reach the upper world to look upon his bride?
