  1. High School Planning Class of 2016 Diplomas, Classes & More

  2. Vocabulary • Requisite- a class required by NYS in order to graduate • Prerequisite- a course that must be taken before another (ex. Studio art must be taken before any other art course) • Semester- a half year course, fall or spring • Elective- a course that is not required but of interest to you • Credit- 1credit=1 year long course that meets daily in which a student earns a passing grade • 0.5 credit= a year long course that meets every other day or meets every day for only 1 semester

  3. Grade Level- for a student to move to the next grade level, s/he must accumulate 5 ½ credits (ex. With 5 ½ credits you become a 10th grader; 11 credits puts you in 11th grade) • Transcript- a summary of the courses you’ve taken throughout high school including your final grades. This will be sent to the colleges of your choice. • AP Courses- Advanced Placement Courses are college level courses offered from 10th through 12th grades. Depending on the AP exam score, college credit could be given. The final exam costs $ 85. • IB Courses- International Baccalaureate Courses are very rigorous, demanding courses that can also give you college credit. The final exam costs $ 140. Each additional test is $96. • Class Rank- Students averages each year are put in rank order from the highest (#1) to the lowest. • Weighting- For the purpose of ranking, classes are weighted: Honors=1.02, AP & IB-SL=1.03, IB-HL=1.04. • * There is currently discussion by the district to change the weighting system*

Diplomas Offered • International Baccalaureate- an international diploma which includes the same requirements as an Advanced Regents Diploma and beyond • Advanced Regents/Honors- must pass 8 regents exams (65%) and earn 3 credits in a foreign language • Regents Diploma- Must pass 5 regents exams and a foreign language proficiency exam, with a 65% or higher • I.E.P. - a high school diploma for some students in Special Education

Advance Regents/ Honors Diploma • English- 4 credits* • Social Studies- 4 credits** • Math- 3 credits** • Science- 3 credits** • Health - .5 credits • Art and/ or Music- 1 credit • Foreign Language- 3 credits* • Physical Education – 2 credits(four years every other day) • * = Regents Exam required

  6. Regents Diploma • English- 4 credits* • Social Studies- 4 credits** • Math- 3 credits* • Science- 3 credits* • Health - .5 credits • Art and/ or Music- 1 credit • Foreign Language-1 credit • Physical Education – 2 credits • * = Regents Exam required

  7. What classes will I take in 9th grade? Your Schedule will look something like this: 1. English 9 (R or H) 2. Global Studies I (R or H) 3. Integrated Algebra* or Algebra A 4. Earth Science* (R or H) 5. E.S. Lab (odd) / P.E. (even) 6. Lunch 7. Foreign Language I or II 8. Art / Music 9. Study Hall/Elective/Support Class

  8. Who chooses my classes? • Your 8th grade teachers will give recommendations for your 9th grade classes. (R or H) • Your grades and effort will help your teachers decide where to place you for 9th grade

  9. Honors vs. Regents • Honors Recommendation: • 90’s average • Quality assignments turned in on time consistently • Excellent class participation and effort

Exciting Opportunities in the High School Fun electives such as: • CAD drawing • Technical photography • Introduction to Broadcast/TV • Basic Electricity/Electronics • Clothing and textiles • Child Development • Foreign Foods • American Sign Language • Business Law • Ceramics • Psychology • Comparative Religions • Elements of Theatre and much more!!
