  6. Scriptural development • Scripture does not contradict itself • New Testament does not replace Old Testament. Rather perfects it. • Eye for an eye – Exodus 21:23-24 • You have heard it said, “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil. When someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other one to him as well” – Matthew 5:38-39 • Perfection of charity • Analogy of Faith – interconnectedness of doctrine

  7. Senses of Scripture • Literal sense: What the words of scripture mean in the three contexts already discussed. • Spiritual sense: • Allegorical: typology and symbolism • Moral sense: what do we do? • Anagogical: “leading” where are we going? • Exegesis: critical interpretation of biblical texts • Eisegesis: interpreting the text according to personal presumptions

  8. Scripture in my life • The living word of God • Mediation – to “ruminate” or “chew over” • Scripture cannot be interpreted in isolation but must include Tradition and the Magisterium • Witness of thousands of years of fidelity
