  3. Southern California Salinity Coalition • Formed in 2002 by: • Water and wastewater agencies and districts • Nonprofit • Purpose: “Address the critical need to remove salt from water supplies and to preserve water resources in California” “More Water. Less Salt.”

  5. SCSC Objectives • Goals: • Elevate awareness of salinity-related problems and issues • Seek, promote, and support solutions

  6. Observation • Salinity may be the most under recognized water-quality problem facing California and the southwest

  7. What is the issue? • Salt levels increasing in: • Surface water and groundwater supplies • Wastewater and recycled water • Causes: • Natural processes and • Intensive use of water: • Agriculture practices • Land use practices • Commercial • Residential • Salt in water can result in salt imbalance in a basin

  8. Consequences • Salt accumulation: • Degrades water quality • Limits the use of water for: • Agriculture • Industrial uses • Municipal uses • Water recycling • Financial impacts can be large • Cost of corrosion • Cost of treatment

Salt Update Project “Objectives” • Outreach Workshop,identifying challenges of Southern CA salinity management (SCSC) • Update the USBR salinity economic impact model and evaluate regional economic impacts (USBR) • Update California salinity conditions and promote effective regional salinity management (SCSC) • Assess MWD future operational capability to deliver low salt water (MWD)
