  2. Introduction Compliance with the EACH Charter of the Children's Rights in hospital (Leiden 1988) is one of the most significant commitments in the field of health promotion. From principles to practices, we assess how these rights are implemented in practice.

  3. Regina Margherita Children’s Hospital Torino Regina Margherita Hospital is the Children’s Hospital for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of children‘s diseases. The Hospital hosts the Emergency Department and surgical, medical, diagnostic Units for the cure of rare, chronic and complex diseases. It provides cures for onco-emathology diseases, transplants of staminal cells, heart surgery, brain surgery, child and adolescent neuropsychiatry, burns and surgery on new-born babies. It collaborates with HPH Task Forces: • Migration, Equity and Diversity • Health Promotion with Children & Adolescents

Methods  Working group with: • doctors and nurses working in “Regina Margherita” Children's Hospital • representatives of Schools and Voluntary Associations A Manual to evaluate the application of the EACH Charter of Children's Rights in hospital (40 items graded on four incremental levels to guide quality improvements)

  5. Methods The Manual was produced starting from documents by: • ABIO (Fondazione Bambino In Ospedale) • SIP (Società Italiana Pediatria) • AIOP (Associazione Italiana Ospedali Pediatrici)

  6. Methods Health professionals, volunteers and school teachers trained as auditors. Production of a check list to complement the Manual to standardize behaviour of auditors. Self-assessment carried out by the professionals of the department concerned. Teams of three auditors visit the departments.

  7. Methods 2 school teachers (from primary, secondary and high schools) for inpatients hospitalized more than 1 week 3 representatives from 2 Voluntary Associations (ABIO and AVO) In total 21 members of the working group were involved in producing the Manual

  8. Methods 1 school teacher 9 representatives from 3 Voluntary Associations (ABIO, AVO, AITF) In total 25 participants were involved in the 4 day training course to prepare the check list and to become auditors

  9. Methods Everybody was trained to be: Facilitator Auditor Team leader

  10. Results This system to promote the quality of child care is based on principles of shared evaluation and development of improvement actions. The evaluation visits have been conducted: • verifying compliance with children’s rights in hospital; • involving professionals, teachers and volunteers

  11. Results Visits were conducted in: - Regina Margherita Children’s Hospital - other Pediatric Services in Hospitals of Local Health Units in Piedmont 1 or 2 volunteers were involved in all the visits In some visits a representative from the volunteers was the team leader

  12. Results The regional HPH network has increased the number of auditors by organizing two editions of the course for auditors in 5 Local Health Units in Piedmont training 40 health professionals and volunteers.

  13. Conclusions School teachers linked the Right to Education with the Right to Health Volunteers had an active role in addressing patient and caregiver centred evaluations.

  14. Conclusions Specific training activities planned for a greater number of auditors involved. New training courses in “Città della Salute” Teaching Hospitals. Wider assessment of all the Pediatric Services in the Piedmont Region. 

  15. Conclusions The project will be spread to other Italian regions and the new evaluation system will become the HPH Italian network project
