  1. Making the Case

  2. Exodus 20:4-6 "You shall not make for yourself a carved image — any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. 1 John 5:21 “Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.” 1 Corinthians 10:14 “Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.”

  3. John 7:24 James 1:26-27 Eph. 5:19

  4. The Case for the New Testament Church

  5. Is God Pleased by Innovation or Restoration?

  6. O.T. Restoration Efforts Jehoida 2 Chronicles 23:18 Also Jehoiada appointed the oversight of the house of the LORD to the hand of the priests, the Levites, whom David had assigned in the house of the LORD, to offer the burnt offerings of the LORD, as it is written in the Law of Moses, with rejoicing and with singing, as it was established by David. Hezekiah 2 Chronicles 31:3 The king also appointed a portion of his possessions for the burnt offerings: for the morning and evening burnt offerings, the burnt offerings for the Sabbaths and the New Moons and the set feasts, as it is written in the Law of the LORD.

  7. O.T. Restoration Efforts Josiah 2 Chronicles 35:6 So slaughter the Passover offerings, consecrate yourselves, and prepare them for your brethren, that they may do according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses." Jeshua Ezra 3:2 Then Jeshua the son of Jozadak and his brethren the priests, and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and his brethren, arose and built the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings on it, as it is written in the Law of Moses the man of God.

  8. O.T. Restoration Efforts Nehemiah Nehemiah 8:14-15 And they found written in the Law, which the LORD had commanded by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths during the feast of the seventh month, and that they should announce and proclaim in all their cities and in Jerusalem, saying, "Go out to the mountain, and bring olive branches, branches of oil trees, myrtle branches, palm branches, and branches of leafy trees, to make booths, as it is written." All restoration movements worked the same way: Go back to the Scripture! God’s Commands The Inspired Pattern

  9. Is God Pleased by Innovation or Restoration? Christian Religion can be Corrupted/ Must be Restored Beware: Vain Worship (Matthew 15:8-9) Beware: Self-Imposed Worship (Colossians 2:20-23)

  10. II. The Apostles Revealed the New Testament Pattern The Apostles were guided in TRUTH by the Holy Spirit John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. John 16:13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come 1 John 4:6 We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

  11. II. The Apostles Revealed the New Testament Pattern The Apostles were commissioned to spread the truth (Matthew 28:18-20)

  12. II. The Apostles Revealed the New Testament Pattern Their message was VALIDATED by God Mark 16:20 And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen. 2 Cor 12:12 Truly the signs of an apostle were accomplished among you with all perseverance, in signs and wonders and mighty deeds.

  13. II. The Apostles Revealed the New Testament Pattern They were authorized to DEFINE doctrine. Acts 2:42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. Acts 6:2, 4 Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, "It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables…4 but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word."

  14. II. The Apostles Revealed the New Testament Pattern They were authorized to DEFINE doctrine. 1 Thess 2:13 For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe. 2 Thess 3:6 But we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly and not according to the tradition which he received from us.

  15. II. The Apostles Revealed the New Testament Pattern They were authorized to “ORDER” churches. • 1 Cor 4:17, “…who will remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach everywhere in every church.” • 1 Cor 7:17, “And so I ordain in all the churches.” • 1 Cor 11:34, “And the rest I will set in order when I come.” • 1 Cor 16:1, “…as I have given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you must do also.”

  16. II. The Apostles Revealed the New Testament Pattern New Testament is our SOURCE for the Apostles’ Doctrine 2 Thess 2:15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our epistle. 2 Peter 3:1-2 Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle (in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder), 2 that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior,

  17. II. The Apostles Revealed the New Testament Pattern New Testament is our SOURCE for the Apostles’ Doctrine John 21:24 This is the disciple who testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true Col 4:16 Now when this epistle is read among you, see that it is read also in the church of the Laodiceans, and that you likewise read the epistle from Laodicea.

I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding. 16 Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how will he who occupies the place of the uninformed say "Amen" at your giving of thanks, since he does not understand what you say? 17 For you indeed give thanks well, but the other is not edified.”

  23. Portrait of a New Testament Church Sang • Ephesians 5:19, “speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord” • Colossians 3:16, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”
