Slug Web Monitoring Michael Cutter mcutter@ucsc.edu soe.ucsc.edu/~mcutter Advisor: Professor Zhang The Personalized Search Engine Information Retrieval and Knowledge Management Laboratory v Using S.W.M. • Sammy the slug could use a traditional search engine for the information it wants, but this slug has better things to do. • Sammy uses the Slug Web Monitoring (S.W.M.) system. The SWM keeps Sam up to date on new articles published; based on the information searched for. S.W.M. Platform Repeat for more accurate results Search for dynamic news RSSs Index 1 3 4 2 Implicit behavior tracked News! Review recommendations 5 Future User Studies Platform parses a list of RSS feeds User searches on web application Behavior is monitored through Firefox add-on ‘QueryLogToolbar’ When RSS feeds are updated recommendations are pushed to user to review User’s rating and behavior are monitored and recorded to improve recommendations • Release platform for voluntary use over the internet • Collect large pool of data that be used to train classifier • Controlled experiments • Demographically diverse users will be selected from • Goals: • Isolate features which influence relevance to user • Do browsing behavior imply relevance • Do demographical differences change results?
