German Blitzkrieg against Poland • The Luftwaffe(German air force) bombed and tanks fought on the ground • The Russians invaded Poland as part of the Nazi-Soviet Pact • 1940 • France was invaded and Britain came to help • Britain had to rescue it’s troops at Dunkirk • France surrendered and Germany occupied Northern France and set up the Vichy government in the South

Axis Advancements • Germany bombed Britain from September 1940- June 1941 • Britain was never conquered • General Erwin Rommel pushed British forces out of North Africa • Germany and Italy took Greece and Yugoslavia • By 1941 the Axis Powers controlled most of Europe • The Japanese occupied Asian nations and Pacific Island nations

Germany turns on the Soviets • In June 1941 Hitler broke the Nazi-Soviet Pact and invaded the Soviet Union for its resources • Stalin’s army was not prepared and endured heavy casualties • the Russian winter prevented the Germans from occupying the nation • Concentration camps • Prisoners were forced into labor and others were put to death • 6 million Jews died during the Holocaust

  6. The U.S. Joins the War • Lend-Lease Act of 1941 • President Roosevelt's attempt stay out of the war , while supplying Allies with war materials • December 7, 1941 Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and brought the U.S. into WWII
