  1. The Communion of Saints I The Church Triumphant • Blessed in heaven can pray for the souls in Purgatory, as well as on earth • They are the third part of the Communion of Saints • They are triumphant because they have completely conquered sin, and share in eternal glory.

  2. The Communion of Saints II The Blessed In Heaven • Canonized Saints • The most important of these is the Mother of God • Many other souls (possibly even people we have known) • Church honors these souls on November 1 - All Saints – Holy Day of Obligation

  3. The Communion of Saints III. Saints in Glory • We are united to them in our love, grace, and union in Christ. • In our prayers, especially the Liturgy we join in the glorification of God • The great communion of saints lifts us up and generates fruits of grace in us

  4. Communion of Saints IV. Honoring the Saints • We do not worship the saints, but we pray to God through them. • They are united to us through Christ, and want to help us. • We honor God when we venerate the Saints • They are masterpieces of God’s grace • Grace has triumphed in them and the devil has been conquered. • In venerating them we honor God, whose life shines forth in them. • Devotion to the saints goes back to the early days of the Church • Early Church honored Apostles after their deaths • Later the Church honored the Martyrs (especially liturgically) • Gradually the practice was extended to other holy men and woman. • The Saints show us that we can reach heaven, and they show us the way.
