  3. 1 SEED COLLECTION IN THE JUMA SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT RESERVE Rooted in Hope

Background history on the cooperative that will generate income to students at the JumaSustainable Development Reserve The seed collection initiative in the Juma Reserve started in 2009, through a partnership between FAS and the Federal University of Amazonas - UFAM, offering a course for 15 students of the J.W Marriott school at Boa Frentecommunity, on collection of native seeds using sustainable practices In 2011, with Marriott International support, new collection equipment were bought. Among them, helmets, ropes, safety equipment and others. • PARTNERS In 2010, FAS and SEBRAE supported the creation of the Cooperative of Native Seed Collectors which is formed by the students and is currently under final process of formalization

NEXT STEP Support to field activities to accomplish the first commercialization of native seeds collected • Activities that will be developed • Register each collector • Identify, plot and register matrix trees • Review guidelines to manage botanic material • Review operational, management and logistical details related to native seed collection • Collect firsts native seeds 15 students will review best practices on how to collect, trade andalso prepare the first commercialization native seeds 1 The 5-day activity will take place in Samuel Benchimol Conservation and Sustainability Center and its surrounding areas at Boa Frente community [MAY] SUPPORT THE STUDENTS’ SEED COLLECTORS COOPERATIVE Ideally, this activity must happen on May 24-29th

Engaging private sector in poverty alleviation and forest conservation activities Onboard workshop to engage private sector within FAS and Rooted in Hope activities A productive agenda will be develop so invitees could understand the challenges of poverty alleviation and forest conservation and assess how their institutions and companies can contribute to it 3 [TBD] WORKSHOP AT RIO NEGRO TO ENGAGE MAJOR DONORS FROM PRIVATE SECTOR Invitees will have the chance to visit local communities benefited by the BolsaFlorestaProgram, walk in the forest and swim in the Rio Negro river

  18. Boat regularly used by FAS to held high-level workshops and meetings. With 20 cabins, it can comfortably fits 40 people and is a fantastic experience to live the Amazon and better understand its challenges.

  19. On the same concept, only in 2010, FAS had hosted more than 10 meetings and workshops with World Economic Forum, the Norwegian Parliament, Princes of Denmark, Minister from Indonesia, Minister of Mozambique, 8 African countries representatives, among others
