  1. Developing Modern Institutions Of Higher EducationWhile Changing the Concept of Teaching Dr. Woody Sears SMK University of Applied Social Sciences Vilnius

  2. In the Beginning… Look, Jane, Look! See Focus Examine Systemize Comprehend Replicate/Teach

  3. Our First Meetings with Authority Parents Priests Teachers Father knows best! Pay attention to your teacher! Teacher-Centered Classroom versus Student-Centered Classroom Authoritarian vs. Participative

  4. Overcoming Authority: THE Challenge • Authority  Power • (Power corrupts!) • Authority: The Tool of Neanderthal Managers (see article in Google) • It comes with every role • Paradox: If you use it, you lose it!

  5. Authority’s Limits • The Zen Promise: The open hand… • USMC: Everyone has capabilities and experience and should be heard! • Too many “Tell & Test” teachers in the system – not only in Lithuania!

  6. Your Discipline is NOT Inviolate!!! • Remember “Did You Know?” (See on Google: Shifthappens) Half of what kids learn in the first 2 years of university will be obsolete before they graduate! Why? • The culprit: Moore’s Law – 1965 to 2020 • Exponential growth – everywhere! • Desk tops and lap tops already obsolete!

  7. What Do They NEED To Know?(For THEIR future, NOT our past!) • Except where certification is required (and even then) there are only two prerequisites: Interpersonal skills and Project Management skill • These are essential skills. Everything else can be taught/learned. Coaching/mentoring work!

  8. Some Necessary Changes • Students as clients, not revenue sources • Closing the social distance between teachers and students, administrators and faculty • Institutions as learning communities • Using technology to monitor student attendance and class participation – for fast feedback to avoid student failures • Focus on desired outcomes at every level!!!

  9. New Roles for Educators • Teachers become classroom managers and facilitators of individual and group learning. • Administrators negotiate guidelines/standards with faculty and students. Maintain contact with stakeholders. Priority: student success! • Institutions are Involved with stakeholders, influential in communities. Role models for Corporate Social Responsibility!

  10. Attitudes are (almost) Everything • We are family!!! • Responsible for the success of communities and their stakeholders • Ethical and transparent transactions • Praise and rewards and appreciation daily • Self-respect and mutual respect rule!!! • OTHERWISE… Obsolescence waits!
