  1. Comments to Sophia Kaitatzi-Whitlock: Why the Political Economy of the Media is at the Root of the European Democratic Deficit Stig Hjarvard Department of Media, Cognition and Communication, University of Copenhagen

  2. Commodification of citizens • De-commodification of political communication as political strategy • Democratic surplus when political communication was under political regulation during 1970s and early 1980s? • The lowest common denominator? Why not the highest? • Albert Otto Hirschman: Exit versus voice – market versus politics - as regulatory instruments / feedback mechanisms? • Graham Murdock: public service and its conceptualization of the audience: citizens, consumers, workers? – Communards?

  3. A pan-European political public sphere • The positive experience of Europa TV – an early example of a communicative space for the European Res Publica • ”The pathological condition of EU citizens’ ignorance is produced by the absence of ad hoc pan-European channels” (p. 22) • Does a European political public sphere necessarily have to be constituted by media operating at a European level? – a projection of the national model to the European level • The experience of Euronews, BBC World, Sky News etc. – supplements to a predominantly national news consumption • Maybe a European public sphere may be constituted by a network of loosely interconnected media addressing audiences at different geographical levels and through various serious, popular, specialist (news) media

  4. The role of media in the transformation of the public sphere Stig Hjarvard: ”News in a Globalized Society”

  7. Depoliticization? ! ? • Depoliticization may certainly be fostered by the reluctance to built political communication channels • However, lack of legitimacy of EU institutions may have many other sources than the absence of European political media providing political information services – perhaps a right-wing repoliticization of the nation vis-a-vis a social responsible Europe is a much more important political force?
