  1. U.S. Commercial Service TURKEY TURKEY: ENERGY FOR THE FUTURE MAY 15, 2007

  2. DOMESTIC NEEDS • In 2006, power plants produced 170 Billion kWh: • 41 % natural gas-fired plants • 27 % coal-fired plants • 27 % hydro & wind • 5 % oil-fired • Demand is growing by 8% per annum. • By 2020, projected need will be 400 – 500 Billion kWh

  3. MEETING THE DEMAND • TURKEY IS OIL AND GAS POOR • COAL RESOURCES, BUT 93% LIGNITE • SIGNIFICANT HYDRO: • ECONOMICALLY USABLE POTENTIAL: 35,000 MW • CURRENT GENERATING CAPACITY: 13,000 MW • OTHER RENEWABLES: WIND, SOLAR • RENEWABLE ENERGY LAW OF 2005 • PLANS FOR NUCLEAR, BUT MANY OBSTACLES

  4. TURKEY AS EAST-WEST ENERGY CORRIDOR

  5. PETROLEUM SOURCE: BOTAS

  6. PIPELINE GOALS • (1) BOSPHORUS BYPASS • 55,000 SHIPS / YEAR • BOSPHORUS & DARDANELLES CAN’T SUPPORT ADDITIONAL TRAFFIC SAFELY • FEED CEYHAN AS A HUB • SAMSUN – CEYHAN TO BE COMPLETED IN 2009 • JOINS EXISTING BTC AND KIRKUK-CEYHAN • CEYHAN AS OIL, GAS & PETROCHEMICAL CENTER

  7. GAS TO EUROPE

  8. MAJOR GAS PIPELINES • TURKEY-GREECE INTERCONNECTOR (UNDER CONSTRUCTION) • CONNECTS AZERI GAS FROM SOUTH CAUCASUS PIPELINE • INITIALLY .8 BCM ANNUALLY, RISING TO 11.5 BCM IN 2012 • PLANS TO LINK TO SOUTHERN ITALY • NABUCCO (PROPOSED) • 2000 MILE PIPELINE LINKING TURKEY, AUSTRIA, HUNGARY, BULGARIA & ROMANIA • 8 – 13 BCM, TO AS HIGH AS 31 BCM BY 2020 • STRONG RESISTANCE FROM RUSSIA

  9. EXPORT OPPORTUNITIES • SIMPLE/COMBINED CYCLE POWER PLANTS • UPGRADES TO EXISTING PLANTS • SMALL HYDRO PLANTS • WIND MILLS • PIPELINE EQUIPMENT – INSTALLATION / WELDING • COMPRESSOR STATIONS • NATURAL GAS STORAGE FACILITIES • ENGINEERING AND DESIGN
