  2. Why Go Driverless? • Over 30,000 deaths annually, domestically • Over 1,000,000 deaths annually totally • No drunk driving • Free Time!

  3. Developement • Sebastian Thrun • Only Successful Vehicle at Darpa Challenge • Google names him fellow, leads team • Used Similar technology on street cars • Developed system that could potentially be used on any car

  4. How it Works • LIDAR Based Laser system sends 64 different beams of light and measures the distance/shape/size of objects • 28 ½ measurements per second • Combined with Radars and Wheel encoders • Produces incredibly precise image of surroundings

  5. How It Works • In addition to top laser and Radar on bumpers • 2 Narrow View Cameras on dashboard • 1 Wide View Camera on dashboard • GPS • Computer Processing Unit in trunk

  7. What Makes it So Unique? • Volvo, Mercedes, Audi, Toyota all testing out driverless features • Google only truly driverless model • Google’s Important Patents • How it learns and makes decisions

  8. Is it Practical? Pros: • Can be applied to any car • Proven to be safe • More fuel efficient • On wide scale use, would decongest traffic Cons: • $150,000 in equipment each • Not legal in most states • Laws would have to be re-written
