5. Background In Ireland, where poor economic conditions for hundreds of years drove scores of Irish away and deterred others from moving to its shores, diversity is a recent development. Ireland currently has one of world’s fastest growing economies and as a result of this rapid development, we as a country must be able to adapt to a more multicultural environment. The greatest impact we, Suas, feel this change would have will be focused towards Ireland’s youth. On account of this, we are running a youth photography competition, centered around increasing awareness of growing multiculturalism in Ireland (specifically Dublin), as one of the events run during the 1000 Families Exhibition, planned to be launched mid-September in Merrion Square

7. Project Objectives To run an event centered around creating youth awareness of growing multiculturalism issues in Ireland. To understand how the meaning of diversity differs through the eyes of our youth using visual representation. To involve our youth in these areas at an early age in order for them to have a valuable impact on these issues in future years

Project Scope Photographs of “diversity” taken by kids living in Dublin which will be: Emailed to a Suas address Need to set up an email account specifically for this and make sure there is enough space so that account wont crash (limit size of photos that are emailed) Mailed to Suas office and scanned Scanned from home computers and put directly on a website Volunteers needed to filter through photos to make sure they are appropriate to display on a website. Filtered photographs will then be sent out to be judged (hopefully Tom Stoddart) Target Age Group: 7-18 (separate into 3 different competitions) Ages 7-10 Ages 11-14 Ages 15-18

13. Project Scope (cont.) Awards (provided by sponsors) will be given to the top three photographs taken in each age group and top three photographs of the overall competition. Winning photographs will be displayed in Merrion Square, similar to the those in the exhibition, and these enlarged photographs will then be put on display at Belfast and Cork in the next two years. Competition will take place over 2-3 weeks and award ceremony take place the final weekend in Merrion Square. Awards will be judged and distributed by (Tom Stoddart?) Ideas generated to possibly form a calendar or collage of some sort out of all of the accepted photos into the competition (in the form of a map of Ireland as a whole showing each of the separate cities that are involved in the exhibition and hopefully accumulating all of the photos that kids have taken into one map).

14. Project Deliverables Why are we running this competition? What type of beneficial results are expected to come out of the time and effort we are investing into this project? Some deliverables we are shooting for are: An event that will slingshot Suas as an organization into the public’s eye and create a connection with other NGO’s in this struggle to adapt to a more diverse atmosphere. A visual representation of surrounding diversity present day Dublin that will create awareness in order for necessary short term actions to be made. A long term impact that will involve the youth in this city getting involved publicly on these issues and eventually helping to create a smooth transition into this new era of a more diverse country. A shift from a culture that is solely based on protecting its own traditions, to a culture that is welcoming to others. With Ireland as rapidly growing as it is from an economic perspective, running events similar to this competition will demonstrate to others that we as a country accept immigrants as part of our culture. Hence, more immigration will lead to a higher economic growth.
