  1. Mr. Basil PROJECT MEMBERS Ted Selker Leonardo Bonanni APPROACH Modern kitchen appliances have given us the ability to preserve food but never to grow it fresh. Mr. Basil is an autonomous, self-contained hydroponic appliance that provides fresh basil without the dirt or maintenance associated with traditional indoor plants. A reservoir of nutrient solution is pumped through the soil-less growth medium each day while high-power LEDs bathe the plant in tropical light. Simple sensors measure the salinity and pH of the solution and warn users when the solution needs to be replaced. http://www.media.mit.edu/context
