Bureau of Labor Statistics Overview • BLS • Mission: The Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor is the principal Federal agency responsible for measuring labor market activity, working conditions, and price changes in the economy. Our mission is to collect, analyze, and disseminate essential economic information to support public and private decision-making. As an independent statistical agency, BLS serves its diverse user communities by providing products and services that are objective, timely, accurate, and relevant. • Leadership: Keith Hall, Commissioner • Organization: • 2,393 FTE in National and Regional offices • Current FY 2010 Resources: $611 million

  3. BLS Goals • BLS supports Secretary Solis’ vision of Good Jobs for Everyone by measuring labor market activity, working conditions, and price changes in the economy. Statistics produced by BLS support the formulation of economic and social policy affecting virtually all Americans. • BLS provides the information necessary for sound decision-making by producing objective, timely, accurate, and relevant statistics.

BLS Results • How we will measure our performance. • BLS will measure its performance based upon the standards established by the Interagency Council on Statistical Policy (ICSP), which encompass the two areas (and six dimensions) listed below. • How we will measure success. • Product Quality: Timeliness, Accuracy, and Relevance. • Program Performance: Cost, Dissemination, and Mission Achievement. • Do you believe these are the right areas (product quality and program performance) to measure? • Do you believe these are the right dimensions to measure product quality and program performance?

BLS Strategies • Our approaches. • We will innovate our data collection, production, and dissemination to improve the value of our products. • Our strategies to achieve these goals include: • Better inform the public. • Build value through innovation. • Continually assess program priorities. • Collaborate with other statistical agencies. • Address respondents' concerns and burden. • Do these strategies make sense to you?
