Individual Right • All people treated Equally under the LAW • Idea of civil rights/ equal opportunity • Protection of civil liberties—freedom of thought and action. • People have the right to make choices and decisions even if they are bad ones. • Individual rights are limited by the rights of others. (Yelling Fire in a crowded building)

  5. Representative Government • Modern Democracies • Power comes from the people • Orderly transfer of power • Majority rule with respect for the minority (Minority has the right to criticize and can try to change the majority’s opinion.)

Reason • Compromise • Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle used logic and reason to explore new ideas • Compromise: the exchange of reasoned arguments, opinions, and information • Blending of views, give and take, never get 100% of what you want, values the right to talk freely • Every person has worth and dignity. (Human begins are intelligent and disciplined not wild beasts.)

  7. Rule by Law • Individual freedoms are important but not absolute • Need for written law to protect (Complete freedom would result in anarchy) • Idea of the need for balance between authority and freedom • Everyone must obey the law

  8. How do you build and keep a democracy? • You must have: • a strong middle class • classless education system • understanding of democratic principles • political consensus • growing economy • support from other nations • free press • professional military
