  1. Water 2012

  2. Bottled vs. Tap • You taste activity • Cost/Benefit analysis • Spring vs. Tap vs. Purified • Cost Tap = 1 cent per gallon, purified/spring water best price = 83 cents per gallon but runs up to 5 dollars per gallon • Tap water is regulated by the EPA with regular, consistent testing while bottled water is regulated by the FDA with no regular or consistent testing

  3. Drinking Results: • A = Distilled Water (K.C., KS Tap is the source) • B = Tap Water from our room (west sink) • C = Spring Water (Great Value), Welpman Spring, MO • D = Nestle Purified Water (reverse osmosis or distilled with some minerals added for taste, TX Tap water is the source)

  4. Water – why is it important • You can live for a month without eating • You can live for a couple of days without drinking • Water is critical to support life as we know it (C, H, O, N are the four main atoms associated with what makes life and two of those four are found in H2O)

  5. The Water Cycle!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Question: • If the water cycle naturally cleans water why do we (humans) need to treat the water we use before discharging it back into the natural world?

  7. Answer: • For thousands of years it was a complete mystery why people generally became sick when they congregated together in large groups for any stretch of time. The simplest answer to this is that they became sick in their own waste as nature could not break down the immense concentration of waste in a suitable time to not allow massive contact by humans.

  8. Waste Water Treatment: • Wastewater Treatment Plant Tour - "Flush To Finish" - YouTube

  9. To Review: • There are three main parts to waste water treatment: • Primary: Physical Filtration (up to 60% clean) • Secondary: Biological (microlife cleans up to 90% clean) • Tertiary: Chemical Filtration (up to 99% clean) but most civic water treatment systems only use primary and secondary treatment before adding a dose of chlorine and releasing the treated water back into the streamway.

  10. What water gets treated? • Seinfeld

  11. So . . . Who’s right? George or Elaine? • Are all of the pipes connected? • Or are you going to mess up the system if you pee in the shower because there are separate pee pipes and regular pipes?
