  3. History and Introduction "The Institute of Medicine (IOM) is an independent, nonprofit organization that works outside of government to provide unbiased and authoritative advice to decision makers and the public". (Para 1) As an extension of President Lincolns National Academy of Sciences, Dr. Robert Glaser founded the IOM in 1970.

  4. IOM Work One report by the IOM "detailed instances of health care providers offering such smarter care: hospitals preventing re-hospitalizations, upgrading their records systems and cutting out ineffective therapies, for example" (Lowrey). Another report looks at the spending issues by the over testing and care that is not necessary. "Today's approach to paying hospitals and doctors for each test or treatment "encourages wasteful and ineffective care" (Conaboy).

  5. My Practice My practice standards are to provide the best, quality care I can for my patients. The hospital I work for is going to electronic medical records to improve the record keeping process. My critical thinking skills allow for me to question the physicians about test and test results the influence my patients outcomes and my help to prevent re-hospitalization. We have a team based approach to patient care, where the nurses round with the physicians and then communicate with the rest of the group, i.e. case management, therapy, etc.

  7. What is a Healthy Work Environment? Components to a healthy work environment: • Leadership • Communication • Adequate Staffing - Research shows adequate staffing is imperative to a safe work environment ( Nursing World, 2012) • Critical Thinking Nurses - Nurse’s opinions and thoughts are valued (Miracle, 2008) • Recognize other staff and give encouragement - If a staff member does something well, show appreciation ( Miracle,2008)

  8. Who Creates Healthy Work Environments? • Everyone is responsible for creating a healthy work environment (Nursing World,2012) • National Center For Nursing Quality (NCNQ) • Established in 1998 • Nursing quality through measurement, research and, collaborative learning (Nursing World, 2012) • Nursing Organization Alliance (NOA) -2004 -Advocates criteria for a safe environment (Nursing World, 2012) • American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN ) -2005 -Standards for a healthy environment (Hamilton, 2007) • Nurse’s Bill of Rights - Protects nurses to receive a an appropriate workplace -According to the nurse’s bill of rights, nurses have rights regarding environments that allow them to act in accordance with professional standards and within their scope of practice (Nursing World, 2012).

  9. Why is a Healthy Enviroment Important? • Promotes SAFE patient care (Hamilton, 2007) • Decreases the chances of medical errors and unwanted stress (Hamilton, 2007). • Creates for a better communication pathway amongst staff (Hamilton, 2012).

  10. How does having a healthy work enviroment influence my nursing practice • In my current nursing practice area of MED/Surge, healthy work enviroment practice standards influence my practice by giving me the available tools necessary to maintain a healthy work environment. MED/surge is a very fast and busy environment. Using proper communication is a key I must use to maintain safety. • As a nurse, I am the ultimate one in charge for my patient safety. I must have control over my environment to the best of my ability to have the best patient care outcomes possible (Hamilton, 2007).

  11. American Nurses Association (ANA) What is it? According to their website the American Nurses Association (ANA) is a professional organization that represent the interests of registered nurses in the United States. The ANA strives toward the enhancement of the nursing profession: •High standards of nursing practice are promoted •Ensuring the rights of nurses in the workplace are upheld •Show a view of nursing that is both positive and realistic •Involved in lobbying Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues that affect nursesand the public (Nursing World, 2012)

  12. Who and how long has it been around? • The ANA has been around since1896 (Nursing World, 2012). • Delegates from ten alumnae associations gathered, so they could create a national professional association for nurses. They met at Manhattan Beach Hotel on September 2, 1986 (Nursing World, 2012). • The Nurses’ Associated Alumnae of the United States and Canada was formed after the constitution and bylaws were completed on February 11-12, 1897. They held their first convention in 1898. • In 1911 the Nurses’ Associated Alumnae changed its name to the American Nurses’ Association (Nursing World, 2012).

  13. Why? • Statement of Purpose: the ANA is “dedicated to ensuring that an adequate supply of highly-skilled and well-educated nurses is available, ANA is committed to meeting the needs of nurses as well as health care consumers” (Nursing World, 2012).

  14. How the practice standards influence me In my current area of medical/surgical nursing the American Nurses Association practice standards influence my nursing practice by helping me focus on advocating for my patients and what is in their best interests without fear of retaliation.

  15. JCAHOWhat is it? • JCAHO is “an independent, not-for-profit organization that accredits and certifies more than 19,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States… accreditation and certification is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to meeting certain performance standards”(The Joint Commission, 2012). • JCAHO Mission: “To continuously improve health care for the public, in collaboration with other stakeholders, by evaluating health care organizations and inspiring them to excel in providing safe and effective care of the highest quality and value” (The Joint Commission, 2012). • JCAHO Vision Statement: “All people always experience the safest, highest quality, best-value health care across all settings” (The Joint Commission, 2012).

  16. JCAHO:Who created it and why? “Ernest Amory Codman, MD, FACS… known best for his advocacy of the “Idea” which was simply the premise that hospital staffs would follow every patient they treat long enough to determine whether or not the treatment was successful, then learn from any failures, and how to avoid those situations in the future” (American College of Surgeons, 2010). The “Idea” was the basis for the Hospital Standardization movement founded by the American College of Surgeons, and the precursor to the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals (JCAH) formed in 1951 (American College of Surgeons, 2010).

  17. JCAHo: How long has it been around? The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations is a private, not for profit organization established in 1951 to evaluate health care organizations that voluntarily seek accreditation (US Department of Health and Human Services, 2010).

  18. How JCAHO influences my nursing practice JCAHO practice standards influence my nursing practice by adherence of guidelines that promote advocacy through safe and effective care for the patient, all while striving to provide the highest quality care possible within the healthcare setting. I am devoted to following these practice standards in such a manner as so to uphold the credibility and respect of the nursing profession.
