GLC 2000 objectives • Creation of a Global Land Cover map documenting conditions for 2000 in a consistent and uniform manner • Creation of a Global Burnt Area map documenting distribution and extent of burning for 2000 • Creation of appropriate meta-data files • Making all of the above available to users and to contributors

  3. GLC 2000 characteristics • Hierarchical classification legend appropriate to global and national levels • Basis for stratification for land cover change measurements • Attuned to the needs of environmental conventions and should provide a benchmark for future environmental convention development • Global context for more detailed regional and national applications

  4. Programmatic aspects • Update / complement to DISCover V1.0 • Global Monitoring for Environment and Security demonstrator • Help with data access and capacity building for developing countries
