  2. About Zahir Shah • Zahir Shah was born on October 15, 1914 in Kabul, Afghanistan. He died on July 23, 2007 in Kabul, the city where he was raised. • Zahir shah came into power when he was just 19, when his father, Moḥammad Nāder Shah, was assassinated on November, 1933.(Britannica)

  3. About Zahir Shah • Zahir Shah ruled Afghanistan from 1933 to 1975 when his brother in law took him over in a bloodless coup on July 17, 1973. • He was later referred to as “The Father of the Nation”.

  4. The Coup • In 1979 Zahir shah’s first cousin and brother in law, Mohammad Daoud Khan overthrew him while he was on a trip to Italy(Nations…) • It was a nearly bloodless coup which created a republic with Daoud as the president.

  5. Daoud’s Connections • When Daoud became president of Afghanistan he took military and political advice from the USSR(gwkhan). • While in his presidency the Cold War was taking place between the US and the USSR. He had remained neutral even though the USSR was his main trade partner.

  6. Zahir Shah’s views • Zahir shah was the king of Afghanistan, therefore his idea for a government was a constitutional monarchy(Robinson) • His plans for the country included, trying to better the infrastructure of Afghanistan and create new roads.

  7. Daoud Khan’s views • As the first president of Afghanistan Daoud khan preferred the republic over the constitutional monarchy. • While he was in office he sought to lower the countries dependence on the soviet union, which lead to his downfall.
