  1. Invasive Species

  2. Alien Invasion • Invasive Species • Non-Native (exotic, alien) • BUT ALSO disrupt the native ecosystem  Biodiversity Loss • Have serious implications for economy, environment, and society **Generally consume a lot of resources and space, and outcompete native species

  3. Asian Carp

  4. Design an Alien • Brainstorm…. • What are some traits that might make a species a strong invader? • Take 5 minutes with a partner to design a hypothetical animal with strong invasive powers (or redesign your favourite animal/plant) • After this time, take 2 minutes to share your species with another pair

  5. Common Characteristics • Rapid growth and short life cycle • Able to grow in a wide range of habitats/climates • Require a lot of space • Disperse quickly • No natural predators • Wide diet range (not picky eaters) They themselves are called generalists and there is great ecological damage when they outcompete specialists

  6. Invasive Impacts • Watch a documentary from BBC • Record information about social, environmental and economic impacts.

  7. Solutions? • Mechanical/Manual Control • Chemical Control • Biological Control • Prevention
