DNA Replication

DNA Replication. VACHS BIOLOGY. Today’s Question : When a mutation occurs in one strand of DNA, can it spread to other strands? . DNA Structure. Review : 1. DNA has a double-helix shape 2. The outside pieces are called a “phosphate backbone.” 3. The inside pieces are called “base pairs.”

  1. DNA Replication VACHS BIOLOGY

  2. Today’s Question: When a mutation occurs in one strand of DNA, can it spread to other strands?

  3. DNA Structure Review: 1. DNA has a double-helix shape 2. The outside pieces are called a “phosphate backbone.” 3. The inside pieces are called “base pairs.” WHAT ARE THE FOUR BASE PAIRS?!?!?!

  4. DNA BASE PAIRS ADENINE and THYMINE GUANINEand CYTOSINE

  5. DNA IS CONSTANTLY REPLICATING… BUT HOW?!

  6. STEP 1) DNA “UNZIPS”!

  7. STEP 2) NEW BASE PAIRS ARE ADDED TO EACH ORIGINAL STRAND!

  8. STEP 3) YOU END UP WITH TWO IDENTICAL STRANDS!

  9. 6. THIS IS CALLED “SEMI-CONSERVATIVE” REPLICATION!

  10. LET’S TRY IT: PIPECLEANER DNA!

  11. ASSIGN EACH TABLE GROUP A ROLE: DNA HELICASE (1 person): Responsible for retrieving and unzipping the original strand! DNA POLYMERASE (2 people): Responsible for retrieving new base pairs and creating the complementary (new) strands!
