  17. Capacitance Technology Brief introduction to Capacitance Technology

  18. Capacitance Technology Theory • Measurement of the electrical field across two plates • One plate is positively charged, the other is negative (ground) • The capacitance measurement across the plates is affected by the dielectric strength of the material between the two plates

  19. Capacitance Technology Theory • Imagine making a giant capacitor • Make one of the plates a round rod so that it easy to work with • This round rod will be the positive plate and we’ll call it the PROBE

  20. Capacitance Technology Theory • The wall of the metal tank will be the negative plate (ground) • A Controller will monitor the capacitance between the Probe (positive) and the wall of the tank (negative) • The capacitance will depend on the level of material contained within the tank

  21. Applying Capacitance

  22. Fluorescence Technology Brief introduction to Fluorescence Technology

  23. Fluorescence Technology Theory • Fluorescence is the ability of a compound or a molecule to absorb light energy at one wavelength and instantaneously emit the energy at a higher wavelength. • Only a select few compounds have the ability to fluoresce.

  24. Fluorescence Technology Theory • An excitation filter allows only a specified wavelength to pass into the sample. Select compounds will fluoresce such as the oil and X molecule. A second filter (emission filter) blocks any non-oil fluorescence, such as the “x” molecule, from getting to the sensor. -λs -λf

  25. Fluorescence Technology Theory This shows the compound structures that make up hydrocarbons

  26. Fluorescence Technology Theory • Every hydrocarbon compound has a unique signature wavelength at which it fluoresces • By targeting the signature of the aromatic hydrocarbon compounds, the instruments of Arjay provide a reliable and accurate indication in ppm of the concentration of Oil in Water

  27. Fluorescence Technology Theory Arjay’s HydroSense 2410 ppm readings plotted against laboratory test over a period of time

  28. Benefits of Fluorescence Technology • Specifically targets the aromatic tag that is present in the hydrocarbon contaminated water • Selective hydrocarbon approach eliminates interference from other parameters in the water such as • Turbidity • Suspended solids • animal/vegetable fats or oils

  29. Benefits of Fluorescence Technology • Simple site calibration provides a total Oil in Water reading that is correlated against your own local laboratory and/or preferred analysis method • Non-contacting optics offers low maintenance on both bench-top and on-line monitors

  30. Benefits of Fluorescence Technology • On-line instruments do not require solvents, sample preparation or sample extraction • Fluorescence monitors both dissolved and free oils for a true total oil reading

  31. Oil inWater instruments of Arjay Arjay offers 4 models for PPM monitoring of Oil in Water • FluoroCheck II • HydroSense 2410 • HydroSense 3410 • HydroSense 3420

  32. FluoroCheck II • The FluoroCheck II is an Oil in Water PPM monitor • The unit uses UV Fluorescence technology • The FluoroCheck II is a bench-top unit for manual sample taking

  33. FluoroCheck II • A sample of water is collected in the jar • A hexane or pentane solvent is added to extract the oil from the water (as per EPA 1664 Rev A or ISO 9377-2 methods)

  34. FluoroCheck II After a quick shaking and few minutes of retention time, the solvent rises to the surface bringing the oil with it

  35. FluoroCheck II • A cuvette sample of the solvent is prepared and inserted into the FluoroCheck II

  36. FluoroCheck II The FluoroCheck II displays instantly the ppm reading of the sample

  37. HydroSense 2410 • The HydroSense 2410 is an Oil in Water PPM monitor • The unit uses UV Fluorescence technology • The HydroSense 2410 is a stand-alone equipment for continuous on-line monitoring in harsh conditions

  38. HydroSense 2410 • The HydroSense 2410 is designed for industrial wastewater applications, e.g.: • Produced water • Storm water run-off • Effluent monitoring from industrial plants

  39. HydroSense 2410 • A sample stream continuously flows through the special non-contacting sensor chamber and is expelled to drain • This unique chamber tolerates suspended solids and turbidity making the HydroSense 2410 ideal for monitoring in tough conditions and environments

  40. HydroSense 2410 A few standard features on the HydroSense 2410

  41. HydroSense 2410 • Maintenance made easy • The lamp box lifts easily to a door bracket to access the flow tray • No tools are required and the flow or power does not need to be turned off continue…

  42. HydroSense 2410 • Maintenance made easy • The flow plate is easily removed or can be cleaned in place • The lamp door opens for direct access to the lamp • Lamp life is a minimum of 18 months and the display warns when replacement is approaching

  43. HydroSense 3410 & 3420 • The HydroSense 3410 & 3420 are Oil in Water Monitors • These units are used for clean water applications • They provide closed loop control to return the stream to the process

  44. HydroSense 3410 & 3420 • HydroSense 3410 uses UV Fluorescence to target petroleum hydrocarbons • HydroSense 3420 uses Light Scatter to monitor any free oil types, i.e.: • Petroleum • Synthetic • Animal and vegetable oils

  45. HydroSense 3410 & 3420 • Typical Features

  46. HydroSense 3410 & 3420 • Typical Features

  47. Benefits of having on-line instruments • Having instruments on site to monitor for traces of Oil in Water offers many benefits: • Provides trending data to make informed process optimization decisions • Alerts for maintenance needs on upstream equipment • Provides immediate indication of impeding environmental issues continue…

  48. Benefits of having on-line instruments • Having instruments on site to monitor for traces of Oil in Water offers many benefits: • Reduces laboratory cost and waiting time • Provides 24 hour a day X 365 days monitoring • Supports and correlates routine laboratory analysis
