Education and Outreach Research Experience for High-Schoolers (REH) Shaik, Jeelani, Tuskegee University, DMR 0611612 Faculty Shaik Jeelani, Mahesh Hosur, Vijaya Rangari, (TU) Students: Mary Rogers, Sandrea Brundidge-Young, Shaik Zainuddin, Okechuwku Akpa, Nydeia Bolden, Gregory Strawder, Jessie Mayo (TU) The objective of the REH is to involve high school students in the research on advanced materials, motivate them to consider careers in science and engineering and to help them in preparing and applying for admission to colleges. 18 students from local area high schools were identified to participate in a 2-week research experience program. The students were paired with PhD students who served as mentors and role models. They were given briefings covering different topics. These included: Viscosity and Elasticity, Composite Manufacturing and Characterization, Transistors and Diodes, Atomic Force Microscopy, Non-Newtonian Fluid Behavior. Lastly, the students were able to compete in a carbon nanotube building contest. The contest took place at Tuskegee University’s Chappie James Museum and was in place in order to see which team could build the longest carbon nanotube out of black balloons.
