  1. Totalitarianism in Germany

  2. How Did World War I Affect Germany? Caused economic troubles and a need for blame Great Depression caused easy influence as a country Deep debt for damages caused by Kaiser Led to the rise of nationalism and Nazism in Germany Trade was limited, because the Depression hit shortly later Few jobs; many jobs lost

  3. Why Did Totalitarianism Spread So Quickly After World War I in Germany? Germans were eager to find someone to blame. They had terrible inflation in the 1920s which made Germans have little faith in the government. Adolf Hitler won all support as dictator by blaming the Jews for World War I. Their Great Depression caused Germans to follow Nazis and other totalitarianism ways. They were quickly offered a type of uncomplicated law and order.

  4. What Conditions Led to the Collapse of the Old Government? Germany’s defeat in World War I caused the government to collapse The Kaiser (King) decided to then provide a Socialist government, the Weimar Republic There were many revolts at this point as well as a lot of debt to America In addition there was a Wall Street Crash and unemployment grew to 6 million people Hyperinflation had a lot to do with the last causes of the governments fall

  5. Who Supported the Totalitarian Leaders and Why? The Nazi party supported the Totalitarian leaders Germans followed leaders like Hitler, because he promised reforms and a change/ rise in their government and nation People felt they needed a dictator to get them “back on their feet” especially after the fail of the Weimar Republic I feel that the Germans supported leaders such as Hitler, because they were in a vulnerable place and a dire need for change in their country

  6. How Did the Dictator Seize Power? • Adolf Hitler gained control of the Nazi party • He won support by blaming Jewish people for Germany’s defeat in World War 1 • He claimed that the German people belonged to a superior “Aryan” race • Hitler claimed that they would rule the world as the master race • In 1933, Hitler threatened a communist uprising to gain force

  7. What Reform Did the Dictator Bring About? Hitler set up a Fascist state in Germany Nazis preached for hard work, sacrifice, and service to the state Gestapo, secret police, arrested opposers of Nazi rule Waged violent campaign against Jews (Concentration Camps!) Launched building programs, banned strikes, and placed rules and controls on wages and prices

  8. Could This Happen Here? • Things happened in World War II, because they were in a deep economic crisis and became vulnerable as a country • These types of things wouldn’t really happen in the U.S, because though we are in a recession, we are not vulnerable as a country. No one can appear and pull the blame to another • As Americans we look for a solution and not so much blame. • This could happen to any country that allows it to happen; we never would.
