  1. “From Zero to ATPL”Žilinská univerzita v ŽilineTeaching the World to Fly:Lessons from Over 80 Years in Aviation Education

  2. The Purpose of Education • The Educated Man • will turn out to be good • will know how to make good use of his knowledge • Justified in an era of relative stability in which knowledge and technology changed very gradually and in an era in which education was considered a right and privilege for essentially the elite class.

  3. Re-examination of the Purpose of Education • In an era of knowledge explosion, technological revolution and a social policy of educational opportunity, this mindset of the purpose of education and this faith in the power of transmitted long-lasting knowledge is no longer appropriate. • Modern is a very temporary state.

  4. Re-examination of the Purpose of Education • We now know that in the world of the future we must define the mission of education as to produce competent people – people who are able to apply their knowledge under changing conditions. • We also know that the fundamental competence all people must have is the competence to engage in lifelong learning. • We know that the way to produce these competent people is to have them acquire their knowledge and skills in the context of real world application.

  5. Lifelong Learning • Philosophy that has taken root in a whole host of different contexts in the United States. • Lifelong learning is attitudinal; that one can and should continually be open to new ideas, decisions, skills or behaviors. • Lifelong learning sees citizens provided with learning opportunities at all ages and in numerous contexts both at work, at home.

  6. Lifelong Learning • Lifelong education is a form of pedagogy often accomplished through various means, including traditional classroom instruction, distance learning or e-learning, continuing education. • It also includes postgraduate programs for those who want to improve their qualifications, bring their skills up to date or retrain for a new line of work.

  7. Lifelong Learning – Not Uniquely American • In October of 2002 the Global Conference on Lifelong Learning organized by the World Bank, the Baden-Württemberg Foundation for Development-Cooperation, and the German State of Baden-Württemberg met in Stuttgart, Germany. • The conference was supported by industrial giants BMW and Deutsche Telekom.

  8. Lifelong Learning – Not Uniquely American • The conference was organized in response to the increasing realization that globalization, and the growth of the knowledge-based economy, pose economic and technological challenges to education systems worldwide. • The purpose of the conference was to promote the transformation of traditional education systems into a LLL environment that promotes learning throughout the life cycle, from childhood to retirement.

  9. Lifelong Learning – Not Uniquely American • The report from this conference stated, “In the 21st century, workers need to be lifelong learners, adapting continuously to changed opportunities and labor market demands of the knowledge economy. Lifelong learning (LLL), therefore, is not a luxury for any country. Education systems in all countries will have to evolve in that direction. Economic growth is increasingly driven by knowledge, and no country can remain competitive without applying knowledge”.

  10. Lifelong Learning – Not Uniquely American • More recently, the European Union adopted a Communication in October 2006 entitled "It's never too late to learn". • This document suggests lifelong learning to be the core of the ambitious Lisbon 2010-process, in which the whole of the European Union should become a learning area.
