Halima Cassell's work has been exhibited all over the world, and her Asian roots combined with a fascination for African pattern work make her work visually striking. Halima Cassell makes ceramic vessels with clearly defined edges inspired by elements in African Art & Islamic architecture. 4- Edges 14 Artist Statement I create a mood and feeling of dynamic tension in my work by playfully manipulating the planes and facets of the patterns against each other. The stresses that this creates help me to achieve the maximum impact within the overall design and also to push the boundaries of the material to its limits.When creating a piece, the most exciting moment for me is when my flat designs become dramatically transformed when charted over a structure and then taken to another level by heavily carving into it. The hue of the clay body is crucial because I rarely use glazes, instead I rely on the clay body itself, either stoneware or earthenware, to provide colour in my work. I also rely on the piece itself to dramatise the tones and textures through the effects of light and shadow. In my early work I was exploring the boundaries of my new found ‘modus operandi,' which was infused with Islamic influences drawn from heavily carved architecture. This led me to look to other examples of intricately carved and constructed buildings from all around the world. In addition, I was inspired by the repetitive motifs and patterns derived from African surface design. Delving deeper into these architectural influences I discovered that I was intrigued by the internal space and the construction, which were articulated together on the external surface envelope.Subsequently, my work was influenced by a new emphasis on the balance between masculine and feminine forms whilst working with the same elements of design and process.More recently I have become interested in cutting more aggressively in to the original form, sometimes to the point where the form begins to distort and becomes no longer recognisable as a geometric volume.

  14. Emma Lundgren 4- Edges 14 An interpretation of the lifestyle and fashion of London fixed gear bikers. It responds to their desire to express their personality through embellishment and decoration. Through my exploration into this sub-culture, I became fascinated by the way fixed gear cyclists represent their lifestyles and personalities. Function and fashion come together to form identity ” coloured bicycle components and details are carefully picked to match their clothing and character. My challenge was to build a fashion concept the same way they build their bikes. I’ve created new ornamentation for the young at heart. They’re wearable, fun, art pieces with a functional twist appealing to the contemporary people with a desire to express themselves.

  15. Emma Lundgren 4- Edges 14 Emma is based in London, United Kingdom. She studied at Royal College Of Art and graduated in 2011. Her collections are produced in United Kingdom. Swedish born Emma Lundgren presents a new direction for textile innovation and the implication of technology within fashion design through the complex synergy of 21st century techniques with artisan traditions. Her unique aesthetic and vision of the textile landscape has already secured this young designer countless awards even at this early stage of her career including those from The Embroiders Guild, Chartered Society of Designers, The Royal Society of Art and the Michael Threschow scholarship where she currently sits in the jury. Her unique expressive aesthetic has been exhibited internationally in museums such as MOMA, & Nordiska Museet in Stockholm, London, New York and Paris and has already achieved notable press placements internationally in style, sports and textile publications such as Sports Int, Dazed&Confused, Tokion, Residence, +81, Elle, Tokion, SuperSuper. She can also been seen and heard in lectures she does on various occasions discussing and presenting her witty Scandinavian style.Emma Lundgren studied a BA in Textile Design at Central St Martins before she was quickly snapped up to work on projects for H&M, John Galliano, McLaren & Ford Automotive and Nokia for her expertise in cutting-edge textile applications before being named at one of 2010’s up-and-coming fashion designers by Swedish ELLE Magazine. Emma Lundgren then completed an MA program in Textile Design Mixed Media at The Royal College of Art followed by showing her collection at Stockholm Fashion week as a finalist in the ‘Young Industry Fashion Award’, invited to show with Designers Block at London Design Week and featured with La Fortuna Studio along New York Fashion week. There is no doubt that Emma is a true beliver of wanting to redefine the way industry views textile and fashion as we move through the new decade.
