  2. Question 1 • 1. The assassination of an Iranian nuclear engineer. • 2. Iran threatened to close off the Strait of Hormuz. • 3. An Iranian court handed down a death sentence to a 28-year-old American citizen accused of spying.

  3. Question 2 • 1979 Revolution—Radical Shiite Muslims, led by Ayatollah Khomeini, overthrew Iran’s monarchy and imposed strict Islamic rule on what had been a Western-leaning country. • Iran turns into a theocracy. • Good relations between the US and Iran end.

  4. Question 3 • The sanctions have hurt Iran’s economy, which also suffers from government mismanagement and corruption.

The government responded with brutal crackdowns in which as many as 150 Iranians were killed and more than 4,000 arrested and tortured. • The Iran/US relations are poor and approaching a “state of war”. • The government/citizen relationship is decreasing. The unemployment rates are increasing and citizens are protesting in response to rigged elections, human rights violations, and oppression.

Iran says they are pursuing nuclear technology in order to create efficient energy and protect the country from nuclear warfare.
