  3. PRESENTATION GOALS • Raise awareness of drop-outs in Bladen County • Raise awareness of programs and services

  4. Bladen County Dropout Personnel • In addition to counselors at each school, dropout personnel include the following: • Ms. Marion Coe, Social Worker • Ms. Arlene Wren, Social Worker • Mr. Jose C. Rodriguez, Director Drop Out Prevention

  5. What Is A Dropout? A dropout is a student who was enrolled in a public school at some time during the reporting year; was not enrolled on day 20 of the current year; has not graduated from high school or completed a state or district approved educational program; is not temporarily absent due to suspension or school approved illness; and did not transfer to another school, graduate, or die.

  7. Questions for Thought What were the characteristics of our students who did not graduate from high school? Did these students complete class assignments? Do homework? Participate in extracurricular activities?

  8. Characteristics of Students At Risk • Low socioeconomic status families • Minority groups • Linguistic minority background • History of academic failure • Older in age than classmates • Emotional or Behavior problems • Lack of psychological attachment to school • Chronic absenteeism
