  2. Stages of Sleep Stage 1: Light sleep, muscle activity slows down, and occasional muscle twitching occurs. Stage 2: Breathing pattern and heart rate slow, slight decrease in body temperature.

  3. Stages of Sleep Stage 3: Deep sleep begins, brain begins to generate slow delta waves. Stage 4: Very deep sleep occurs. Rhythmic breathing, limited muscle activity, brain produces delta waves. Stage 5: Rapid eye movement occurs, brainwaves speed up and dreaming occurs. Muscles relax and heart rate increases. Breathing is rapid and shallow.

  4. Importance of Sleep Learning and Memory : Sleep helps the brain commit new information to memory. Metabolism and Weight: Chronic sleep deprivation may cause weight gain by affected the way our bodies process and store carbohydrates. Safety: Sleep debt contributes to a greater tendency to fall asleep during the daytime. These lapses may cause falls and mistakes.

  5. Importance of Sleep Mood: Sleep loss could result in irritability, impatience, inability to concentrate, and grouchiness. Heart health: Serious sleep disorders have been linked to hypertension, increased hormone levels, and irregular heartbeat. Disease: Not getting enough sleep alters immune function, including the activity of the body’s killer cells.

  8. Unhealthy Ways to Get Sleep • There are a few very unhealthy ways that people use to get to sleep. They can have a major affect on your health. • Alcohol Use • OTC sleep aids (tylenol pm, etc) • Prescription Sleeping Pills

  9. Sleep Health There are many things that affect the amount and quality of sleep we get. As we know now, however, we are in complete control of our sleep, and we need to be proactive about it. Sleep your way to better health!!!
