T-506 REPORT FOR 6-27-13 • Goal: study radiation effects on Si diode sensors at fluences of 5, 20, and 80 MRad (electromagnetically induced) • ILC applications (far-forward calorimetry) • Four types of sensors: n-type/p-type and float-zone/magnetic-Czochralski • Wisdom had been that sensors don’t withstand one MRad

  2. T-506 So Far We 6/19 Begin installation (open access) Th 6/20 Complete installation; search and secure 3-5pm Fr 6/21 Alignment with beam. Activation study with dummy sample. Accumulate 2 MRad of first 5 MRad run. Sa 6/22 Complete three of four 5 MRad runs. Accumulate 15 MRad of first 20 MRad run. Su 6/23 Complete first 20 MRad run and last 5 MRad run. Mo 6/24 Study first 5 MRad sample at UCSC. Tu 6/25 Complete 2nd 20 MRad run. We 6/26 Down most of shift (see next); begin 3rd 20 MRad run Th 6/27 Complete 3rd 20 MRad run; confirm beam quality (thanks Janice & Peter); 4 MRad calibration run (capillary and radiochroic dosimetry)

June 26 Tribulations • Changing to 3rd 20 MRad sample, smell something burning • Peltier controller hot; relay burned out (bad connection) • Try running entire apparatus cold; motion stages give out at -2o C or so (freezing condensation? Was very humid) • Find new peltier controller; re-install with beefy relay (thanks to Keith Jobe) • 24 hour period with no problems afterwards. •  No clear evidence yet of trouble with radiation, but move most things outside target box (will complete today).

  4. But: first results available Tuesday • 5 MRad exposure of p-type float-zone sensor Clearly not dead after 5 MRad!
